Siena Rallies In Set One, Captures MAAC Win Over Volleyball

Oct. 4, 2008

Stats

BALTIMORE - Loyola College led by as many as seven points in the first set of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon against Siena, but the Saints slowly crawled back and scored the final three points of the frame to swing momentum in their direction.

Siena (6-8 overall, 4-1 MAAC) defeated the Greyhounds (4-13, 1-4) 25-23, 25-13, 25-17.

Loyola played solid first-set defense from the start, as Karlee Woodward and Stasia Collins opened the match with a block of Amanda Begin.

After a tie at 2-2, Woodward stepped back to serve, Loyola reeled off five points in a row, two coming on Rachel Schillinger kills, to go up, 7-2.

Collins and Schillinger each recorded kills, bookending a Nina Camaioni ace to push the Greyhounds' advantage to 10-3.

Siena slowly came back, pulling even at 15-15 when Burgandy McCurty and Blair Atkins teamed for a block.

The Greyhounds rallied, however, going up by three, 22-19, when Christina Greenup put away a Siena overpass for a kill.

The Saints scored three in a row, however, tying the set at 22-22. Loyola seemed to have things go their way, though, when a Brianne Bobo serve went long to give the Greyhounds a one-point advantage.

Siena sidedout on a Kau'I Robello kill and scored the final two points to take the first set.

With its momentum gone, Loyola hit just .020 and managed to sideout only 33-percent of the time in the second set.

In the third and deciding set, Loyola pulled to within two, 10-8, on a Woodward kill, but the Saints reeled off three points in a row, pushing their lead back to five.

McCurty, who leads the MAAC in kills and hitting percentage, tallied a match-high 16 kills and hit .520.

Camaioni led the Greyhounds with 11 kills, two aces and 25 digs. Brittany Born added 15 digs, and Collins had seven kills.

The Greyhounds return to the court tomorrow afternoon to take on Marist at 1 p.m.
