Baltimore, Md. - Junior Melanie Mitchell won both the long jump and javelin throw to highlight a successful day at the Goucher Track Classic for the Greyhounds. Mitchell was one of two Loyola field athletes to set school records and took home two of Loyola's five wins on the day.
Michell won the long jump with a school record leap of 15-6. She also won the javelin with a toss of 33.2 meters. A fourth-place finish in the shot put and a runner-up finish in the high jump capped the junior's day. Mitchell's second-place showing in the high jump was due to sophomore Kim Amaducci, who won the event with a school-record height.
Amaducci not only set a school record in the high jump, but by clearing 5-2.25, she also set a meet record.
In the field events, the Greyhounds captured the 4x400 relay with Angeline Diamond, Paige Godfrey, Nicole Gilhuley and Kristen Ford teaming up for the win. Individually, Diamond took second in the 200m in 27.66 and third in 100m in 13.55. Godfrey placed fifth in both the 100m and 200m, while Gilhuley placed second in the 400-meter hurdles.
Freshman Courtney Marro placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.9, while junior Alexandra Salani and senior Bethany Gentry took second and fourth respectively in the 3,000 meters.
"I'm pretty happy with the way we ran today," says Loyola Head Coach Brett Harvey. "Our main focus was to compete well, and with all our first and second-place finishes, I think we accomplished that today. This should help us as the competition intensifies this spring."
The Loyola men also ran a number of unattached athletes at the meet. Their effort was highlighted by a 1-2-3-4-5 finish in the 3,000. Chris Heibell won the event. He was followed by Brian Parker, Gian Caccia and Dan McDevitt. Freshman Tim Burns took third in the 1,500.
The Greyhounds, who finished third at Saturday's meet, head to Durham, N.C. next Saturday to compete in the Duke Invitational.
