Women's Track & Field Starts Strong At Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Loyola University Maryland women's track and field team started its season with strong performances at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday night.

Senior Samantha Westley led the way for the Greyhounds with a pair of top-four performances. Westley started the night by finishing fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.28 seconds, and followed that by taking first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.50 seconds. The senior's performance in the hurdles was just .06 seconds away from resetting her own school record.

Also competing in the 60-meter hurdles were freshmen Eilis McGovern and Maria Hacker, who placed ninth and 14th respectively in their collegiate debuts.

Sophomore Chika Dunga was the top-performer for the Greyhounds in the 200-meter dash, placing sixth in 27.63. She was one of four Greyhounds to place in the top-10 of the event including sophomore Courtney Willeford (7th in 27.71), Westley (9th in 28.04) and McGovern (10th in 28.39).

Freshman Charlotte Criqui made her collegiate debut at the meet, finishing 18th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.82 and 13th in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.17.

Senior Kristina Krupa placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.86, while freshman Nicole Lopez finished eighth in the event (1:03.36) in her first action on the track in a Greyhound uniform.

The Greyhounds entered two teams in the 4x400-meter relay. The squad of Lopez, Criqui, Krupa and Buccellatto placed second in the event with a time of 4:15.83 in their first time running the race together.

In the field events, Alyssa Harrison finished fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.45 meters, while Kelley Hilbert took 15th in the long jump with a leap of 4.47 meters. Alessandra Piscitelli was the lone Loyola thrower to compete, finishing 12th in the shot put and 11th in the weight throw.

The Greyhounds will be back on the track after the New Year when they head to New York for the New York City Gotham Cup on January 13, 2012.
