This Week's Action

  • Loyola University Maryland will play its first midweek game of the 2011 season on Wednesday night when it travels to Easton, Pa., to take on Lafayette College at 7 p.m.
  • The Greyhounds then return to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on Friday for the first of two days of action at the Villanova Classic. They take on TCU at 5 p.m. on Friday evening, and play the host Wildcats and Colgate at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively, on Saturday. All games will be held in Villanova's Nevin Field House.

Family Affair

  • This weekend's Villanova Classic will be a family affair for Loyola freshman setter Lauren Andersen. Her sister, Krista, is a junior outside hitter at Villanova, and her cousin, Sarah Joeckel, is a junior libero at TCU.
  • There will be familiarity, too, when Loyola takes on Colgate. Anderson and freshman outside hitter Tina Catanach played club volleyball for Tampa United with Red Raiders players Lindsay Young and Maureen Colligan.

Not The Youngest, But Close

  • With 14 sophomore and freshmen on his roster, Head Coach Jake Lawrence has one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I. With three juniors comprising the rest of the roster, Loyola is one of just three programs without a senior on the roster, joining the U.S. Air Force Academy and fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference school Iona (based on a survey of D-I schools).
  • Loyola's 14 freshmen and sophomores are tied with San Diego State for the most in the nation and second only behind Air Force.
  • Of the Greyhounds' 17 team members, the 14 make up 82.3-percent of the squad, the third-highest percentage in Division I.

Catanach Catching On

  • Freshman outside hitter Tina Catanach finished last weekend's Battle of Baltimore with 44 kills in four matches. She set a career-high with 18 in Friday's opener against Morgan State, a match in which she hit .279.
  • This season, Catanach leads the Greyhound with 73 kills, an average of 3.17 per set. She ranks seventh in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in kills, and points (3.52), per set through the first two weeks.

Bullock At The Battle

  • Jac Bullock was named to the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament Team last weekend after posting 21 kills in the four matches. Against Towson, in the tournament finale, Bullock recorded six kills without an error in 11 attempts for a .545 hitting percentage.

Fresh Faces

  • Four players - Lauren Andersen, Tina Catanach, Mindy Maloney and Kara Schiffer - made their collegiate debuts on August 26 against Clemson, and another, Elena Frac, played for the first time in a Loyola uniform after starting her career last year at North Carolina State.
  • The four freshmen combined for 49 kills, 48 digs, seven aces, nine blocks and 93 set assists during the first three matches of 2011.

First Week Honors

  • Freshman outside hitter Tina Catanach was named to the Big Orange Bash All-Tournament Team after finishing with a team-high 29 kills. She also had 18 digs and totaled 35 points.

Lawrence Takes The Helm

  • Jake Lawrence was introduced as the Greyhounds' head coach earlier this summer after spending the last three seasons at Georgetown University. Lawrence, a 2006 graduate of Xavier University, helped the Hoyas engineer one of the biggest turnarounds in program history in 2008 when they improved by nine games.
  • Lawrence will be joined on the bench by Cynammon Burns, a former standout libero at American University, and Patrick Kerley, a fellow Xavier alumnus.

A Look Back

  • Loyola finished 2010 with a 15-20 record and 8-10 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to tie for fifth in the league's regular-season.
  • Nina Camaioni earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to the All-MAAC First Team as a senior. She led the team with 3.98 kills and was second on the squad with 3.06 digs per set. The Greyhounds' only other senior was libero Brittany Born who led the team with 3.79 digs per set
