BALTIMORE - Faye Lukas posted 20 kills in just three sets, and Lauren Andersen had 39 assists, as Loyola University Maryland swept Coppin State, 26-26, 27-25, 25-18, on Wednesday night in Reitz Arena and tied the team's win total from a season ago.

The win was Loyola's eighth of the season in just 12 matches after it finished 2011 with an 8-23 mark.

"This was a good way to finish our non-conference schedule," Head Coach Jake Lawrence said. "Coppin State played extremely hard and pushed us. We need to start faster at the beginning of matches, but it's encouraging to see us have the ability to close."

Loyola, which has won four in a row, hit .265 in the match after opening with 10 errors and a .132 percentage in the first set.

Coppin State built a five-point lead early in the first set and maintained its advantage throughout most of the game, buoyed by 18 errors of one kind or another by the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds had a set-point opportunity at 24-23 after a Jac Bullock kill, but Kandace Thomas had a kill to force extra points. Mindy Maloney battled back with a kill for Loyola and the Greyhounds closed the frame on an Eagles' attack error.

Coppin State found its offensive stride in the second set, putting down 15 kills, but the Greyhounds rallied from an early deficit to take a lead at 13-12. Loyola, however, did not lead by more than a point until it closed out the set with back-to-back Lukas kills.

After having to fight through errors in the first two sets, the Greyhounds cleaned up their attack in the final game, hitting .371 with just three errors on 35 swings.

In addition to Lukas' 20 kills, Bullock had 11, and Dircks and Maloney each had seven. Kara Schiffer pulled up 21 digs, and Dircks had 16.

Loyola takes more than a week off before returning to action on Saturday, September 22, when it plays Canisius College in Buffalo.
