Women's Track And Field Takes Fifth At MAAC Championships

New York - Senior Jackie D'Antonio earned first place in the 800m, and helped the Loyola University Maryland women's track and field team to a fifth place finish in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Armory Track and Field Center.

For the fourth-straight year, the Greyhounds took fifth place, totaling 50.5 points, while Saint Peter's obtained the title with 185.5 points. Rider University totaled 164.5 points, while Manhattan College and Iona College took third and fourth, respectively, with 122.5 and 59 points.

"We're excited with our performance tonight," said head coach Amy Horst. "We surpassed expectations, and broke a number of personal and school records. I'm pleased with our last showing in the MAAC indoor season."

D'Antonio was only the second runner in Loyola history to win an indoor conference title. The senior recorded a school-record time of 2:13.92, leading three Greyhounds in the race. Kellyanne Bondulich took thirteenth, while Alyssa Dorney and Christina Bearden finished fifteenth and seventeenth, respectively.

D'Antonio anchored the distance medley, helping Kelly Maguire, Lisa Potter, and Calli Pappas to a fourth place finish. The 4x400m quad of Megan Trainer, Rebekah Rogerson, Marissa Buccellato, and Jacqueline Porter earned a third place finish, with a school-record time of 4:06.14.

Kiera Harrison contributed the most points to the effort, as two-second place finishes gave Loyola 16 of its 50.5 points. The senior distance runner broke her previous program-best by 30 seconds, finishing the 5K in 17:10.20. Harrison also earned second in the 3,000m, with a time of 10:16.70.

In the sprints, Jeanine Gill led all Greyhounds, with a school-record time of 26:02. Gill finished eleventh in the 200m dash, while teammates Eileen Pastyrnak, Eilis McGovern, and Rogerson grabbed sixteen through eighteen. Jacqueline Porter finished ninth in the 400m, while Megan Trainer, Brianna Nelson, Buccellato, and Margaret Larkin all finished in the top-20.

In the field events, freshman Uchechukwu Emili led the way, recording a new program record for the third-straight week. Emili recorded a weight thow distance of 12.41m. The rookie also competed in the shot put, along with teammates Alessandra Piscitelli (9.58m) and Courtney Willeford (9.12m).

Triple Jump participants Kelly Hilbert and Emma Mascoli finished just inside the top-10, with distances of 9.65m and 9.44m, respectively.

The top field performers for Loyola were Alyssa Harrison in the high jump, and Noreen Petrash and Maria Hacker in the pole vault. Harrison tied for fifth in the high jump, while Petrash and Hacker both recorded 2.7m in the vault.

This season 17 Greyhounds earned 2013 Women's Indoor Track and Field All-Academic team honors, including; Anna Bosse, Marissa Buccellato, Jackie D'Antonio, Mary DeGregorio, Maria Hacker, Alyssa Harrison, Kiera Harrison, Margaret Larkin, Rachel Nerenberg, Eillis McGovern, Jessica Peters, Noreen Petrash, Jacqueline Porter, Lauren Puleo, Jenna Smith, Megan Trainer, and Courtney Willeford.

D'Antonio and Kiera Harrison will advance to the ECAC Championships in Boston March 2-3. Meanwhile, the team will open the outdoor season March 30 at the Towson and Virginia Invitationals.
