CONWAY, S.C. - Loyola University Maryland rallied after falling in the first two sets to win the third against the University of Tennessee, but the Lady Vols held off the Greyhounds for a 25-13, 25-10, 27-29, 25-21 victory Friday evening at the Coastal Carolina Unviersity Invitational.
Earlier in the day, the host Chanticleers beat Loyola in straight-sets, 28-26, 25-10, 25-13.
In the third set against the Lady Vols, Loyola held an advantage throughout the frame and had set-point opportunities at 24-23 and 25-24.
Tennessee, however, got kills from Jamie Lea and Kendra Turner to push ahead, 26-25 and had match-point for the first time. Jane Lukas put away one of her 14 kills for the Greyhounds, evening the score at 26-26, but again Tennessee took a one-point lead on a Turner kill.
The Greyhounds sided out when Turner had a hitting error, and Mindy Maloney and Stacey Kazalas combined for a block that gave Loyola a 28-27 lead. Micah Duzey then close the set in the Greyhounds' favor with a service ace.
Duzey had two aces in the match to go with a team-high 15 digs.
Lukas led all players with 14 kils, while Stacey Kazalas had 10 and Maloney added seven.
Earlier in the day, Lukas posted nine kills, while Maloney and Corri Waters added six and five, respectively.
The Greyhounds close play in the tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they face Kennesaw State University.
