Volleyball Swept By George Mason In Tournament Finale

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team fell to George Mason, 3-0, in the final game of the Mason Invitational by set scores of 25-11, 25-19, 25-22.

Ann Ernst led the Greyhounds (3-8) with seven kills and four aces, while Jane Lukas added six kills. Lauren Youngblood led the defense with a career-high 14 digs.

For the Patriots (3-9), Bailey Williams had 10 kills and Caitlyn Hipsher had 21 assists.

George Mason took control of the first set midway through, as the Patriots strung together a 10-0 run to turn a tied score, 8-8, into an 18-8 advantage, en route to a 25-11 victory.

In the second set, the Patriots pulled ahead early, as they scored the first four points before committing a service error. The Greyhounds answered with a 5-0 run of their own before an attack error evened the score at five all. Neither team could gain an advantage after that, until George Mason went on a 12-4 run to close out the frame with a 25-19 win.

Loyola challenged the Patriots late in the third set, putting together a 4-1 run to pull within one, 21-20. The Greyhounds were called for a ball handling error on the next rally, but they rallied for a pair of points that tied the game, 22-22, on a block from Puddy and Lukas. George Mason answered with three-straight points to close out the game, 25-22.

The Greyhounds will return to action for its Patriot League opener on Friday. Loyola will host Lafayette at 7 p.m.
