CATONSVILLE, Md. - Ann Ernst put away 13 kills in the second game of her Loyola University Maryland career, but UMBC overcame deficits in the second and third sets to defeat the Greyhounds, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21, on Friday night in the Charm City Challenge.

Earlier in the day, the Greyhounds beat Delaware State in three to open their 2016 season. In the two matches, Ernst and fellow freshman outside hitter Zoe Pawlak combined for 41 kills.

Loyola (1-1 overall) led for the majority of the second set, pushing ahead by three, 18-15, on a Megan Mondon kill, but UMBC reeled off the next four points to lead 19-18 on a Greyhounds back-row attack error.

A Stacey Kazalas sideout kill gave Loyola a 22-21 lead, but Abbie Mirabella knotted it at 22-22 with a UMBC kill. Loyola went back in front by one off a Retrievers service error, but Brooke Hayden sided out for UMBC to tie the score at 23-23.

From there, a Loyola attack miscue and a Mirabella kill ended the set in the Retrievers' favor. Ernst had six of her 13 kills in the second frame.

Loyola again led throughout the early-going in the third set, taking a 14-11 advantage on a Hayden attack error. The Retrievers (4-2) again used a 4-0 run to take a 15-14 lead on a bad set by Loyola.

Loyola closed what had been a three-point gap to one, 20-19, on a Pawlak kill, but it would score just one point for the remainder of the match.

Haley Puddy added seven kills, and Pawlak had eight for the Greyhounds. Molly Jarvis led Loyola with three total blocks. Erin Cunningham posted a team-best 11 digs.

Mirabella led all players with 16 kills for UMBC.

Loyola wraps up play in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. against Akron University.
