Quick Hits About The Hounds
  • Loyola University Maryland goes back on the road for its next contest. The Greyhounds head to Easton, Pennsylvania for a 2 p.m. game at Lafayette College on Saturday, Jan. 28.
  • Jarred Jones and Andre Walker have combined for 29 of the Greyhounds' 50 games with 10 or more points this season. Jones has posted 10 or more 15 times, Walker 14. The duo of Walker and Jones lead Loyola with 15.1 and 14.8 points per game this season.
  • Cam Gregory has averaged 11.1 points in Loyola first nine Patriot League games, raising his season-long average to 7.7 points. He is shooting 68.3 percent from the field in those games, tops in the League in conference games.
  • Loyola has attempted more free throws (460) than all but one other Patriot League Team (Bucknell, 489), despite being tied for the fewest number of games played (20).
  • Loyola leads Patriot League teams in offensive rebounds per game with 11.6. Cam Gregory leads the way by averaging 2.6 offensive boards per game.
  • The Greyhounds also top the League in 3-point field goal defense, holding opponents to 31.4 percent. That mark is 46th nationally, a vast departure from last year when Loyola ranked 307th.

Patriot League Network
  • For the fourth year in a row, the Patriot League Network on Campus Insiders will provide an outstanding viewing option for college basketball fans while showing more than 125 contests from Patriot League venues, including every Loyola home game.
  • Gary Lambrecht will call the play-by-play with Loyola alum Jim Chivers adding commentary.
  • In conjunction with Campus Insiders, the Network launched in 2013 and provides one of the most comprehensive digital packages of any conference nationally. Check LoyolaGreyhounds.com for links to each game.
  • Fans can watch the digital broadcasts on desktop or laptop computers, any smart phone or tablet and through a variety of connected television devices.

Series History Versus Lafayette
  • Loyola and Lafayette will meet for the 11th time in series history and ninth time as Patriot League foes when the teams take the floor on Saturday. Lafayette evened the series at five games a piece with a 69-78 win when the teams met on Jan. 2.
  • Loyola has won four of the seven Patriot League regular-season meetings since joining the conference in 2013-2014, and Lafayette won a 2014 Patriot League Championships affair.
  • The Greyhounds swept the 2015-2016 season series against the Leopards. Loyola posted an 81-78 victory on Jan. 2, 2016, in Easton, Pennsylvania, prior to defeating Lafayette, 84-77, on Jan. 30 in Reitz Arena.
  • Lafayette used a 28-5 run that spanned both halves to turn an early deficit into a double-digit lead, and Loyola's late run came up short as the Leopards won, 78-69, in this year's first meeting.
  • Loyola trailed by 12, 69-57, with 2:16 to play, but the Greyhounds scored 12 of the next 14 points to get within a pair, 71-69, on an Andre Walker free throw with 44 ticks left in regulation. Nick Lindner, however, hit a three for Lafayette 23 seconds later, and the Leopards held on.
  • The Greyhounds led by nine on five occasions in the game's first 12-plus minutes and took a 24-15 lead on two Chancellor Barnard free throws at 7:57. Lafayette, however, scored 18-straight points to go up 33-25 on a Paulius Zalys jumper with 2:07 to go in the first half.
  • The Leopards led 39-29 at halftime and then scored the first four points of the second half to lead 43-29 on an Auston Evans basket. The lead stretched to 15, but Loyola slowly chipped away, getting it to nine, 55-46, on a Matt Staubi three from the left side with 9:43 to play.
  • Jarred Jones finished with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds, while Walker had 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and a career-best seven steals. Walker's seven steals are tied for third-most in a single-game, matching the mark set in 1998 by Jason Rowe and matched in 2006 by Andre Collins.
  • Zalys led Lafayette with 17 points, while Eric Stafford had 15 and Matt Klinewski added 13.
  • Loyola posted wins of 81-78 on the road and 84-77 at home against Lafayette in 2015-2016.

Last Time Out
  • Andrew Kostecka made all five of his shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, to score a career-high 20 points Wednesday night, and Loyola beat Holy Cross, 65-62, in Reitz Arena.
  • Kostecka, assisted on a Cam Gregory alley-oop layup and then knocked down a three from the left wing with 5:01 left in regulation, staking the Greyhounds to an eight-point advantage, 56-48.
  • Loyola's lead came during a stretch when Holy Cross did not score a field goal for more than five minutes. Malachi Alexander, who matched Kostecka for game-high honors with 20 points, made a three for the Crusaders at 6:11, and Holy Cross scored six points off free throws until an Alexander three went down with 67 ticks left on the clock.
  • Alexander's second three cut the Loyola advantage to four, 59-55, and a turnover on the offensive end put the ball in the hands of the Crusaders. Clayton Le Sann was fouled and made both free throws, cutting it to a two-point game, the closest it had been since Loyola led 31-29 just 39 seconds into the second half.
  • Andre Walker, however made all four of his free-throw attempts after that juncture, and Jarred Jones and James Five each split pairs to seal the win.
  • Jones finished with 14 points and six rebounds for the Greyhounds, while Gregory added 10 points and game-best seven boards. Walker and Fives each had seven points. Matt Staubi led all players with five assists. Alexander had 20 points to lead the Crusaders.

Five-For-Five Freshman
  • Andrew Kostecka had the best statistical game of his young career Wednesday night, scoring a season-best 20 points on 5-of-5 from the floor against Holy Cross. His point total eclipsed the 15 he scored Jan. 5 at Lehigh.
  • Kostecka made all four of his 3-point attempts and also hit 6-of-8 free throws. He added three assists and three steals in 31 minutes of action.
  • His performance moved him back into third on the team in scoring at 8.2 points per game. Kostecka is averaging 9.0 points per game in Patriot League play, a stretch in which he is shooting 50 percent (13-of-26) from 3-point range. Overall, he is shooting 42 percent (21-of-50) from behind the arc and 51.6 percent overall from the field.
  • Andre Walker was the last Loyola player to score 20 or more as a freshman. Walker did so with 21 points in a triple-overtime win against Colgate on Feb. 22, 2015.

Milestone Men
  • Entering the Lafayette game, Jarred Jones needs three points to become Loyola's 36th player to score 1,000 in a career.
  • He will then be just the second to have 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 steals and 100 blocked shots. Erik Etherly (2010-13) had 1,245, 699, 121 and 121.
  • Cam Gregory's seventh and final rebound against Holy Cross on Jan. 25 was the 500th of his career, making him the 22nd Loyola player to hit that plateau.

Distribution Point
  • Matt Staubi came off the bench against Holy Cross and led all players with five assists in just 15 minutes. He has seen action in five Patriot League games this year, averaging 11.6 minutes per, and is averaging 2.6 in those games.

Walker's Outstanding Outing
  • Andre Walker entered Loyola's Jan. 18 nationally televised game against Boston University needing to score 29 to hit 1,000 for his career. By halftime, he was only nine points away from the plateau.
  • Walker finished with a career-high 35 points, the most by a Loyola player since Jamal Barney tallied 40 on Jan. 14, 2009, against NJIT.
  • He did so by going 9-of-12 from 3-point range, tying the school record for most made 3-pointers in a game. Walker matched the mark of Andre Collins who knocked down nine on Jan. 8, 2006, against Marist College.
  • Walker's ninth three of the game came with 12:55 to play in regulation, a basket that gave him an even 1,000 points for his career. By reaching the milestone, Walker became the 35th player in school history with 1,000 or more points.

Upping His Game
  • Andre Walker has significantly upped his scoring in Patriot League action and is averaging 16.2 points through the Greyhounds first nine conference games. With the jump, he has raised his overall mark to 15.1 per game, a number that now leads the team.

Cam Contributing Big, Too
  • Cam Gregory has seen the biggest jump on the team of points per game in the Patriot League (11.1) versus overall (7.7). He has scored 100 of his 154 points (64.9 percent) in the last nine games.
  • Gregory scored 13 at both American and Lehigh, and he then scored a game- and season-high 16 points at Army West Point. After posting 10 points against Holy Cross, Gregory has made 41 of 60 shots, good 68.3 percent from the field. That mark leads the conference in League games. He also is Loyola's top rebounder in conference games with 64, 7.1 per game.
  • Gregory's uptick in production stretches back to Loyola's Nov. 30 win at Stony Brook when he finished with six points and 10 rebounds. In the Greyhounds' last 14 games, Gregory is averaging 9.8 points and 7.4 rebounds.

On The Boards
  • Loyola has outrebounded its opponents in six of nine Patriot League games so far this season and are averaging almost two boards more per game (30.8-28.9). Overall this year, Loyola is slightly ahead of its foes on the boards, averaging 33.4 to 33.2.

Leading When It Counts
  • Lehigh led for 39 minutes, 13 seconds of its Jan. 5 game, but Andre Walker's three with eight-tenths of a second left gave the Greyhounds the win.
  • Loyola overcame an 18-point deficit to pick up the win marking the second time this season it has bounced back after being down 15 or more. The Greyhounds trailed Binghamton University by 15 with less than eight minutes to go in regulation, but they pulled out a 90-85 overtime win on Dec. 10, 2016.
  • The 18-point deficit is the largest Loyola has come back from during the four-year tenure of Head Coach G.G. Smith. It is the largest by any Loyola team since the Greyhounds rallied from 20 down on Dec. 10, 2008, to beat Coppin State University, 73-70, in Reitz Arena.

Clutch Late
  • Andre Walker's game-winning three at Lehigh was his second game-winning basket of the season and third time he has been involved in a play that sealed a victory this year. Walker hit a winning layup with five-tenths of a second remaining at Stony Brook, giving the Greyhounds a 71-70 road win.
  • He then came up defensively at American, keeping the Eagles' Sa'eed Nelson from driving and blocking his 3-pointer at the buzzer for a two-point win.
  • Walker scored 16 of his 19 points in the final nine minutes of regulation and all of overtime at Binghamton, helping aid the comeback victory.
  • He is also 35-of-41 from the free-throw line in the final five minutes of games through 20 games this year.
  • Walker now has scored game-winning points in the last 10 seconds of games five times during his career. Last year, he scored on a drive to the basket with less than five seconds left at home against Lehigh, and he hit two free throws with just over three ticks on the clock for a win at the U.S. Military Academy. As a freshman in 2013-2014, he made two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to beat Colgate University in triple overtime.

Jones Flourishing
  • Jarred Jones has been leading, or among the leaders for, the Greyhounds in scoring and rebounding from the outset this season, and after 20 games his averages stand at 14.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Those marks both are seventh and tied for seventh, in the Patriot League.
  • Starting with a 24-point, 11-rebound effort against Fairfield University on Nov. 23, Jones is averaging 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds. He has scored in double-digits in 13 of those 16 games and has posted four of his five double-doubles.
  • He has led the team, or tied for team-high honors, in scoring 11 times this year, something he has done in 10 of the last 16 games.  The fifth-year senior – Jones received a medical hardship waiver for the 2014-2015 season – also leads the blocked shots (21) , is tied for tops in steals (30) and is second in assists (37).
  • Recently, he broke into Loyola's rebounding career top-20 and is 17th with 537. He logged his 100th career steal against Mount St. Mary's, and he is now 13th all-time with 119. Jones is also fifth on the career blocked shots list with 108.

The Family Business
  • Jarred Jones and his younger sister, Brionna, are both standouts for their NCAA Division I teams. Brionna leads the third-ranked University of Maryland with averages of 19.4 and 10.6 (through game on 1/22). Younger sister Stephanie is a freshman for the Terps, as well, averaging 4.3 points per game.

Defensive Improvements
  • An offseason key for the Greyhounds was to sure up their half-court defense, and through 20 games, statistics show an improvement in that area.
  • Last year, Loyola was 261st in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (75.3 points allowed per game), and it was even worse in opponent 3-point field-goal percentage (307th, .372).
  • This year, opponents are shooting just .314 (109-of-347) from 3-point range and averaging 69.8 points per game. Those numbers rank 46th and 12st in NCAA Division I through games of Jan. 25.
  • In another defensive metric, the Greyhounds are 72nd nationally with 7.3 steals per game.

Getting To The Line
  • Loyola leads the Patriot League in free throws made per game (16.1) and attempts per game (23.0).
  • Despite being tied for the fewest games played (20), the Greyhounds have attempted just 29 fewer free throws than the League-leader in attempts, Bucknell University (489, 22 games).
  • Opponents, in fact, are averaging four fewer attempts from the line this season (373 total, 18.7 per game).
  • Andre Walker leads the League in free-throw percentage, having made 70 of his 80 attempts, good for 87.5 percent

Up Next
  • The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena for their next two games. First, they will host Lehigh University on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m., and then they will take on the U.S. Military Academy at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
