Quick Hits About The Hounds

  • Loyola University Maryland wraps up a two-game homestand on Sunday, Feb. 19, when it hosts Colgate University at 12 noon in Reitz Arena.
  • Jarred Jones and Andre Walker have combined for 40 of the Greyhounds' 67 games with 10 or more points this season. Jones has posted 10 or more 21 times, Walker 19. The duo of Jones and Walker lead Loyola with 15.6 and 15.3 points per game, respectively.
  • Cam Gregory has averaged 12.1 points and 7.4 rebounds in Loyola first 15 Patriot League games, raising his season-long averages to 9.0 and 6.8. He is shooting 67.0 percent from the field in those games, tops in the League in conference games.
  • With its win on Wednesday against Bucknell, the Greyhounds improved to 9-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points. Loyola is averaging 74.0 points in its 14 victories this year.
  • The Greyhounds also top the League in 3-point field goal defense, holding opponents to 32.9 percent. That mark is 37th nationally, a vast departure from last year when Loyola ranked 307th.
  • Loyola has taken more free throws (601) than all but one team (Bucknell, 604) in the lead, despite being tied for the fewest games played (26).

Patriot League Network
  • For the fourth year in a row, the Patriot League Network on Campus Insiders will provide an outstanding viewing option for college basketball fans while showing more than 125 contests from Patriot League venues, including every Loyola home game.
  • Gary Lambrecht will call the play-by-play with Loyola alum Jim Chivers adding commentary.
  • In conjunction with Campus Insiders, the Network launched in 2013 and provides one of the most comprehensive digital packages of any conference nationally. Check LoyolaGreyhounds.com for links to each game.
  • Fans can watch the digital broadcasts on desktop or laptop computers, any smart phone or tablet and through a variety of connected television devices.

Series History Versus Colgate
  • Loyola and Colgate will meet for the eighth time as Patriot League foes and the 10th time overall when the teams take the floor on Sunday afternoon.
  • Both teams won on their last possessions  on their home courts last year, and the Raiders took a 5-4 lead in the series with a 52-49 win on Jan. 21, 2017, in Hamilton, New York.
  • The home team has won each time that the sides have met as Patriot League opponents. No team has won any of the last five games by more than three points.
  • The teams had not played in over 30 years before Loyola hosted the Raiders on January 25, 2014, in Reitz Arena.
  • Malcolm Regisford's basket with under 20 seconds to play provided Colgate with the final difference as the Raiders rallied late to defeat Loyola, 52-49, on Jan. 21.
  • Sean O'Brien drove to the baseline for Colgate and was surrounded by three Loyola players, but he slipped a pass to Regisford in the paint where he dunked to put the Raiders ahead by one. Andre Walker misfired on a three for the Greyhounds, and Regisford came down with the rebound. He was fouled, however, and missed the front end of 1-and-1 with under 10 seconds left. Loyola came away with the rebound and called a timeout.
  • Walker drove the length of the court, but his right-handed layup went off the mark, and Colgate came down with the rebound, was fouled and Will Rayman made two free throws to secure the win.
  • After trailing by as many as five in the second half, Loyola tied the game at 36-36 on a James Fives layup with 11:32 left in regulation, and a Cam Gregory putback two at 8:44 gave the Greyhounds a 38-36 lead. O'Brien tied the game with a layup less than 20 seconds later, but that was the last Colgate field goal for over six minutes.
  • Jarred Jones hit a fading jumper, and Walker knocked down one of his three 3-pointers, staking the Greyhounds to a 43-38 lead at 5:26. Cam Gregory added two free throws 45 seconds later, and Loyola's lead was seven, the largest advantage either team held in the contest.
  • Jordan Swopshire made two free throws for Colgate at 4:23 for the Raiders' first points since 8:21 were on the clock, but Gregory again extended the advantage to seven on a basket with 3:21 on the clock. That, however, was Loyola's last field goal of the game. An O'Brien three from the left side bounced off the rim, caromed off the backboard and went in with 1:58 on the clock, giving the Raiders' their first field goal in 6:23.
  • After a Loyola turnover, Francisco Amiel made two free throws for Colgate, closing the gap to 47-45 with 1:24 on the clock. O'Brien then made a three with a hand in his face 40 seconds later, and the Raiders were back on top. Jones drew contact and went to the free-throw line with 31 ticks showing, and his two free throws put Loyola back up, 49-48, but it was a short-lived lead until Regisford's dunk.
  • Walker finished with 14 points and seven assists to lead Loyola, while Gregory added 10 points and eight rebounds. Jones tallied eight points in only 18 minutes of action due to first-half foul trouble. O'Brien led all players with 16 points, while Regisford had 13 and Swopshire had 12.

Last Time Out
  • Jarred Jones put Loyola ahead by one with a fading jumper from the left block with 44 seconds left in regulation, and he blocked Stephen Brown's layup that would have put Bucknell ahead with under 10 ticks left as the Greyhounds beat the Patriot League-leading Bison, 78-77, Wednesday night in Reitz Arena.
  • Jones finished with game-highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds as Loyola snapped a eight-game losing streak to the Bison with the win. Andre Walker added 18 points, six rebounds and five assists, and James Fives scored a career-high 16 points for the Greyhounds.
  • The Greyhounds led by as many as 15, taking a 57-42 lead on a steal and coast-to-coast layup by Chuck Champion 4:16 into the second half, but Bucknell called a timeout and a John Azzinaro three after the resumption of play sparked a 20-2 Bison run. Azzinaro, who had 12 points, made three of his four 3-pointers during the run, and back-to-back baskets by Nana Foulland gave Bucknell a 62-59 advantage with 8:38 on the clock.
  • Zach Thomas knocked down a three at the top of the perimeter for Bucknell at 4:37, staking the visiting team to a 69-67 lead, but Jones scored just over a minute later, and the game was tied. After Kimbal Mackenzie put Bucknell up one with a 3-pointer, Jones looked to be sealed off in the paint on the next Loyola possession, but he twisted and faded to bank-in an off-balance shot, putting Loyola up by a point, 75-74, with 44 seconds left.
  • Jones swatted Brown's layup attempt with just under 10 seconds left, and Champion pulled down the rebound. He was fouled and made two free throws with five ticks left, putting the Greyhounds ahead, 77-74.

Winning The Close Ones
  • With its 78-77 against Bucknell on Wednesday, the Greyhounds are 6-2 this season in games decided by three or fewer points. Their only losses came in setbacks at Colgate and Navy, but they have now beaten Stony Brook, Lehigh and Bucknell by one, American and Lehigh by two and Holy Cross by three.
  • During G.G. Smith's four years as head coach, Loyola is 15-8 in such games.

Big Down The Stretch
  • Jarred Jones did a bit of everything in the final eight minutes of Loyola's one-point win over Bucknell on Wednesday night. The fifth-year senior posted 10 of Loyola's 16 points, making all five of his field goals over that stretch.
  • He also grabbed three of his game-high 12 rebounds and had what amounted to a game-sealing blocked shot on a Stephen Brown layup. Jones grabbed the rebound, saving it from going out of bounds, as well, after the block.
  • Jones finished the game with 23 points, and he had career-highs in field goals made (11) and attempted (19).
  • After 26 games, Jones' season averages stand at 15.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. He is fourth in the League in scoring and is eighth in rebounding.
  • He has led the team, or tied for team-high honors, in scoring 14 times this year, including each of the last three games.  The fifth-year senior – Jones received a medical hardship waiver for the 2014-2015 season – also leads the blocked shots (27), and is second in both steals (37) second in assists (47).
  • Recently, he broke into Loyola's career rebounding top-20 and is 15th with 577. He logged his 100th career steal against Mount St. Mary's, and he is now 10th all-time with 127. Jones is also fifth on the career blocked shots list with 116.

Fives Comes Alive
  • James Fives was a big part of Loyola's early success against Bucknell as he scored 13 of his career-high 16 points in the first half against the Bison. Before the break, he went 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Four of his points came after he grabbed offensive rebounds for putbacks.
  • The outing was Fives' best during Patriot League action and his first double-digit points performance since scoring 11 on Dec. 10, 2016, at Binghamton University.

Big Week For Walker
  • Andre Walker was named The Rock Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 6, following a pair of wins in which he averaged 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and 2.5 steals last week. The award is his second of the season (Dec. 3) and third of his career.
  • Against Lehigh on Feb. 1, Walker scored 19 points in a two-point win over the Mountain Hawks with his final basket providing the final margin. Tied at 60-60, Walker drove the right side of the lane, crossed over to his left hand and made a contested layup from inside the paint with 27.3 seconds left in regulation. He finished the game with nine rebounds, six assists and two steals to go with his point total.
  • Walker then posted 18 points in the first half, and a game-high 25 overall, of the Greyhounds' outing Feb. 4 against Army West Point, helping Loyola defeat the Black Knights. He knocked down five of seven from 3-point range and also grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals.
  • Walker has continued his strong play and is averaging 18 points and six rebounds over Loyola's last five games.
  • At Boston University, Walker moved into Loyola Top 30 in career scoring. With 1,129 points, he currently sits 29th. He moved into the school's Top 10 in career assists against Bucknell and is 10th with 287. His 138 steals rank eighth all-time.

Clutch Late
  • Andre Walker's game-winning layup with 27.3 seconds left against Lehigh on Feb. 1 was his third game-winning basket of the season and second against the Mountain Hawks. He hit a three with three with eight-tenths of a second left on Jan. 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to push Loyola in front for an 84-83 win the first time the teams met.
  • Earlier in the year, Walker hit a winning layup with five-tenths of a second remaining at Stony Brook, giving the Greyhounds a 71-70 road win. He then came up defensively at American, keeping the Eagles' Sa'eed Nelson from driving and blocking his 3-pointer at the buzzer for a two-point win.
  • Walker now has scored game-winning points six times during his career. Last year, he scored on a drive to the basket with less than five seconds left at home against Lehigh, and he hit two free throws with just over three ticks on the clock for a win at the U.S. Military Academy. As a freshman in 2013-2014, he made two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to beat Colgate University in triple overtime.

Rare Company
  • Jarred Jones scored his 1,000th career point in the first half at Lafayette on Jan. 28, becoming the 36th player in school history to cross the plateau.
  • That in itself put him in rarefied air, but he is also just the second player to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 steals, 100 assists and 100 blocked shots in a career. Erik Etherly (2010-13) had 1,245, 699, 121 and 121.
  • Jones is one of just five active players in NCAA Division I (per Sports-Reference.com) to hit those numbers. The group includes Tim Coleman (NJIT), Jerome Frink (Fla. Int'l 2012-14; LIU Brooklyn 2015-17),  Jones, Reggie Upshaw (Middle Tennessee) and Tim Williams (Samford 2012-14; New Mexico 2015-17).

Cam Contributing Big In League Play
  • Cam Gregory has seen the biggest jump on the team of points per game in the Patriot League (12.1) versus overall (9.0). He has scored 181 of his 235 points this year in the last 15 games.
  • Gregory has made 73 of 109 shots, good for 67.0 percent from the field; that mark leads the conference in League games. He also is Loyola's top rebounder in conference games with 111, 7.4 per game.
  • His 547 career rebounds rank 17th in school history.

Walker's Outstanding Outing
  • Andre Walker entered Loyola's Jan. 16 nationally televised game against Boston University needing to score 29 to hit 1,000 for his career. By halftime, he was only nine points away from the plateau.
  • Walker career-high of 35 were the most by a Loyola player since Jamal Barney had 40 on Jan. 14, 2009, versus NJIT.
  • He did so by going 9-of-12 from 3-point range, tying the school record for most made 3-pointers in a game. Walker matched the mark of Andre Collins who knocked down nine on Jan. 8, 2006, against Marist College.
  • Walker's ninth three of the game came with 12:55 to play in regulation, a basket that gave him an even 1,000 points for his career. By reaching the milestone, Walker became the 35th player in school history with 1,000 or more points.

The Family Business
  • Jarred Jones and his younger sister, Brionna, are both standouts for their NCAA Division I teams. Brionna leads the third-ranked University of Maryland with averages of 19.1 and 10.6 (through game on 2/15). Younger sister Stephanie is a freshman for the Terps, as well, averaging 4.2 points per game.

Defensive Improvements
  • Last year, Loyola was 261st in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (75.3 points allowed per game), and it was even worse in opponent 3-point field-goal percentage (307th, .372).
  • This year, opponents are shooting just .329 (152-of-462) from 3-point range and averaging 69.2 points per game. Those numbers rank 89th and 104th in NCAA Division I through games of Feb. 15.

Getting To The Line
  • Loyola leads the Patriot League in free throws made per game (15.9) and attempts per game (23.1).
  • Andre Walker leads the League in free-throw percentage, having made 92 of his 106 attempts, good for 86.8 percent.

Up Next
  • Loyola plays its final regular-season road game on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at College of the Holy Cross before returning to Reitz Arena on Saturday, Feb. 25, to face American University.
