Colgate Uses Overtime To Top Men's Basketball

Final Stats

BALTIMORE – Colgate University hit two 3-pointers midway through overtime, and the Raiders went 8-of-10 from the free-throw line in the extra period Sunday afternoon to defeat Loyola University Maryland, 66-56, in Patriot League action at Reitz Arena.

Sean O'Brien and Jordan Swopshire hit threes from the top of the perimeter to stake the Raiders (10-19 overall, 8-8 Patriot League) to a 58-52 advantage that the Greyhounds (14-13, 8-8) could not overcome.

Neither Colgate, nor Loyola led by more than eight points during regulation with Colgate taking a 31-23 halftime advantage after shooting 61.1 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. After the teams traded baskets to start the second half, Loyola began to chip away at the margin.

Andrew Kostecka converted a layup with 12:08 on the second-half clock, and Cam Gregory took a Kostecka pass, spun to the basket and made a layup of his own 26 seconds later, making it a 35-34 Colgate lead.

The Raiders momentarily stretched their advantage back to four with a Francisco Amiel three from the right corner on their next possession, but Kostecka responded in kind, and Loyola trailed by a point, 38-37, at 11:05.

Malcolm Regisford scored for Colgate in the paint 26 ticks later, but Andre Walker knocked down a Loyola three at 10:14, and the score was tied at 40-40.

That long-distance basket launched a 10-0 Loyola run that would see Gregory and Jarred Jones make layups and Chuck Champion have a 3-pointer bounce in. Jones' basket at 7:25 pushed the Greyhounds' lead to 47-40, but it would be cut to a pair two minutes later after a Sean O'Brien three.

Gregory had a putback to make it a 49-45 Loyola lead at 4:49, but O'Brien scored off drives on consecutive Colgate possessions, and the game was tied for a sixth time, 49-49, with 3:49 on the clock.

The teams combined for more than two minutes of scoreless play before Kostecka connected on another three with 86 seconds left in regulation to give Loyola a 52-49 advantage. Both teams came up empty on their next possessions, but Colgate's Will Rayman drove the baseline and scored, drawing a foul and making a free throw with 20 seconds left to know the game at 52-52.

Loyola called a timeout with 15.1 seconds left, and Walker initiated the offensive sequence with a drive down the middle. He floated a shot at the basket that went off the mark, and Gregory had a tip-in attempt go long, sending the game to overtime.

Both teams were scoreless for first two-plus minutes of overtime until O'Brien hit a three with 2:16 on the clock. Swopshire then made his from behind the arc with 1:19 on the clock before Chuck Champion converted two free throws for the Greyhounds with 57 seconds left.

The Greyhounds did not make a field goal in overtime, while Colgate hit all but two of its 10 foul shots to seal the win.

Gregory recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Kostecka added 12 points,a nd Walker had 10 to go with five assists for the Greyhounds.

O'Brien scored 18, and Swopshire had 16 for the Raiders.
