Quick Hits About The Hounds

  • Loyola University Maryland goes on the road for its first game in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Postseason Tournament presented by FIVE FOUR.
  • The Greyhounds will travel to Fairfax, Virginia, for a 7 p.m. game at George Mason University on Wednesday, March 15, in EagleBank Arena.
  • Jarred Jones, Andre Walker and Cam Gregory have combined for 65 of the Loyola's 82 games with 10 or more points this year. Walker has posted 10 or more 23 times, Jones, 23 and Gregory, 17. The trio leads Loyola with 15.2, 15.0 and 9.7 points per game, respectively.
  • Cam Gregory averaged 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds during the Patriot League regular-season, raising his season-long averages to 9.7 and 7.6. He shot 67.9 percent from the field in those games, tops in the League in conference games.
  • With their win Feb. 15 against Bucknell, the Greyhounds improved to 6-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points.
  • Loyola has shot the second most free throws in the Patriot League this season (684) despite playing three fewer games than the leader, Bucknell (707).
  • Gregory and Jones have 14 double-doubles this season, the most by a pair of Patriot League teammates.

Series History Versus George Mason
  • George Mason and the Greyhounds will meet for the 13th time when the teams take the floor on Wednesday night in Fairfax, Virginia, and for the first time since the Patriots recorded a 66-52 victory at home on Dec. 8, 2010.
  • Prior to that game, it had been 13 years since the teams had met. They played 2,400 miles to the west in the consolation round of the 1992 Albertson's Classic in Boise, Idaho.
  • George Mason's Ryan Pearson made seven of his nine field-goal attempts to finish with a game-high 18 points and Luke Hancock scored all 13 of his points in the second half while handing out seven assists with four steals to lead the Patriots to the 2010 non-conference victory.
  • After Greyhounds senior guard Jamal Barney opened the game with a baseline jumper, George Mason's Cam Long answered with a three-pointer to give the Patriots the lead and also push the senior guard over 1,000 points for his career. A pair of free throws by junior forward Shane Walker swung the lead back in Loyola's favor before the Patriots scored eight straight to take the lead for good.
  • Seven minutes into the game the run had increased to 14-3 and George Mason led 19-7. Robert Olson scored three straight baskets to get the Greyhounds within six at 26-20 with 5:35 left, but Mason ended the half with seven straight points for the largest lead of the half at 36-23. Long (11 points) and Pearson (10) did most of the damage for the Patriots.
  • The inside play of Pearson and Hancock's scoring helped George Mason increase its lead to 22 at 56-34 with just over nine minutes remaining. Shots began to fall for the Greyhounds and Loyola scored 14 of the next 18 points to get within 12, trailing 60-48 with five minutes to play after Olson's sixth field goal of the game.
  • Pearson added four rebounds and two steals to his game-high point total to lead the Patriots. Lam finished with 15 points on the historic night as the only other player in double figures for the home team.
  • For the Greyhounds, Olson and Shane Walker shared team-high honors with 14 points and Walker added a game-high 10 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Sophomore forward Erik Etherly came off the bench to score seven points with five rebounds, three steals and two blocks and junior forward Anthony Winbush matched his five boards.

Last Time Out
  • Andre Walker scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, leading a Loyola University Maryland comeback from a 16-point deficit, but host Boston University held on late for a 64-60 victory on March 2 in the Patriot League Championships Quarterfinals.
  • The second-seeded Terriers took 16-point leads on two occasions in the second half, the second coming with 16:18 left on a Will Goff 3-pointer. Walker and Andrew Kostecka hit threes on consecutive possessions, and Cam Gregory caught a Matt Staubi bounce pass in the paint for an emphatic dunk, and Loyola was within eight, 41-33, with 14:38 on the clock.
  • Boston University, however, scored the next six points and was back up by 14 on a Kyle Foreman layup at 13:41. Kostecka hit a pull-up jumper and Walker buried another three at 12:50, and the Terriers' advantage was down to nine. After Max Mahoney made two Boston University free throws at 12:15, the margin was 49-38, but Kostecka knocked down another three, and Walker converted two foul shots at 10:52, bringing the Greyhounds within two possessions, 49-43.
  • The margin stayed in the six to 10 points range for the next few minutes, but a three by Walker, one of his four in the game and three in the second half, and two free throws by Jones brought it to five at 5:52. From that point, Loyola got within four points on four occasions, the last coming when Cam Gregory had two offensive rebounds and scored after the last with 1:46 remaining to make the score 60-56.
  • Loyola forced a 3-point miss by the Terriers, and Chuck Champion came down with the rebound for the Greyhounds. Andre Walker immediate took the ball to the basket and was fouled. He made both free throws, and it was a two-point game, 60-58, with 85 seconds left in regulation. Boston University threw the ball into Justin Alston on the left block, and he turned for a hook that found net, and the Terriers had a two-point lead at 1:05.
  • The ball was again in Walker's hands for the Greyhounds, and he made a right-handed layup off a drive with 51.1 seconds left on the clock, and Loyola called a timeout down 62-60. Boston University used most of the shot clock, but a 3-pointer rimmed out, and Gregory pulled down the rebound. Walker drove on the baseline from the left side, but his layup was off the mark. Jones got the offensive board and had a chance for a tip-in, but it too missed. Kyle Foreman grabbed the loose ball for the Terriers, was fouled and hit two game-sealing free throws.
  • Walker's 27 led all players while Gregory and Kostecka each scored 11 for the Greyhounds. Gregory logged his third-straight double-double and sixth since the start of 2017 with a game-best 12 rebounds. The Greyhounds had a 34-28 advantage on the glass. Foreman paced Boston University with 12 points, and Alston had 11.

Moving On Up
  • Through games of March 13, Loyola's 5.5-game improvement over the 2015-2016 season ranks 47th in NCAA Division I. The Greyhounds take a 15-16 record into the CBI First Round after finishing 9-21 last year.

Postseason History
  • Loyola is making its fourth postseason appearance as an NCAA Division I program and its third in the last six years. The CBI bid is also the Greyhounds' 10th overall.
  • At the Division I level, Loyola has played in the 1994 and 2012 NCAA Tournaments and the 2013 College Insider Postseason Tournament.
  • All told, the Greyhounds are 7-9 in postseason play entering the game against the Patriots.

CBI Information
  • The CBI presented by FIVE FOUR is a single-elimination tournament – up until the best-of-three finals – with all games played at campus sites. After the first round games, the quarterfinal round will take place on Monday, March 20, followed by the semifinals on Wednesday, March 22. Prior to the semifinals, the remaining teams will be re-bracketed. The Finals series is a best-of-three in which one team will host two of the three games. Those games will be played on March 27, March 29, and March 31.

All-League Honors
  • Andre Walker became the first Loyola men's basketball player to earn All-Patriot League First Team honors since the Greyhounds joined the conference prior to the 2013-2014 season. He is also the first Loyola player to be a two-time All-League player after earning Second Team laurels last season.
  • Jarred Jones joined Walker on the honor stage, picking up second team recognition. His honor also marks the first time two Loyola players have earned All-Patriot League honors in the same season.

Seeing Red
  • Andre Walker had his two highest scoring games of the 2016-2017 season in contests against Boston University after scoring a game-best 27 points during the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
  • The junior guard tallied 20 of his points in the second half and went 7-of-17 overall from the field, 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
  • Earlier in the year, Walker scored a career-high 35 points in a January win over Boston University, tying a Loyola record in the process with nine made 3-pointers.

Defense At The End
  • Loyola did not allow a Lafayette point in the final 3:10 of regulation during the Feb. 28 Patriot League Championships First Round. During the stretch, the Leopards went 0-of-5 from the field.
  • Lafayette shot 52.6 percent from the field, and 45.5 percent from 3-point range, in the first half. The Greyhounds, however, held them to 41.7 percent and 20.0 percent, respectively, after the break. Loyola also had both of its blocked shots and six of its 10 steals in the final 20 minutes.

Big Down The Stretch
  • Jarred Jones did a bit of everything in the final eight minutes of Loyola's one-point win over Bucknell on Feb. 15. The fifth-year senior posted 10 of Loyola's 16 points, making all five of his field goals over that stretch.
  • He also grabbed three of his game-high 12 rebounds and had what amounted to a game-sealing blocked shot on a Stephen Brown layup. Jones grabbed the rebound, saving it from going out of bounds, as well, after the block.
  • Jones finished the game with 23 points, and he had career-highs in field goals made (11) and attempted (19).
  • After 31 games, Jones' season averages stand at 15.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He is fifth in the League in scoring and is eighth in rebounding.
  • He has led the team, or tied for team-high honors, in scoring 15 times this year, and he has nine games with 20 or more points. The fifth-year senior – Jones received a medical hardship waiver for the 2014-2015 season – also leads the team in blocked shots (34), and is second in both steals (40) second in assists (59).
  • Against Lafayette in the Patriot League First Round, he became the 14th player in school history with 600 or more rebounds, and he is 12th with 606. He logged his 100th career steal against Mount St. Mary's, and he is now 10th all-time with 132.
  • Jones is into all-time at Loyola in blocks with 123. His 1,166 points are 26th all-time.

Clutch Late
  • Andre Walker's game-winning layup with 27.3 seconds left against Lehigh on Feb. 1 was his third game-winning basket of the season and second against the Mountain Hawks. He hit a three with three with eight-tenths of a second left on Jan. 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to push Loyola in front for an 84-83 win the first time the teams met.
  • Earlier in the year, Walker hit a winning layup with five-tenths of a second remaining at Stony Brook, giving the Greyhounds a 71-70 road win. He then came up defensively at American, keeping the Eagles' Sa'eed Nelson from driving and blocking his 3-pointer at the buzzer for a two-point win.
  • Walker now has scored game-winning points six times during his career. Last year, he scored on a drive to the basket with less than five seconds left at home against Lehigh, and he hit two free throws with just over three ticks on the clock for a win at the U.S. Military Academy. As a freshman in 2013-2014, he made two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to beat Colgate University in triple overtime.
  • In the Patriot League Quarterfinals, Walker became the 25th player in program history to score 1,200 or more points. With 1,204 points, Walker currently sits 24th in Loyola history. Against Lafayette in the First Round, he became the 10th player in school history with 300-plus assists and is 10th with 307. His 145 steals rank seventh all-time.

Cam Contributing Big In League Play
  • Cam Gregory saw the biggest jump on the team of points per game in the Patriot League (12.6) versus overall (9.7). He scored 226 of his 280 points this year in those 18 games.
  • Gregory made 93 of 137 shots, good for 67.9 percent from the field; that mark led the conference in League games, and his 64.6 overall mark also leads the conference. He was Loyola's top rebounder in conference games with 146, 8.1 per, and overall with 235 and 7.6.
  • Gregory grabbed 12 rebounds at Boston University in the Patriot League Quarterfinals and became the 14th in program history to total 600-plus at Loyola. He is now 12th in school history with 605.
  • Gregory has seven double-doubles this season, all of which have come in the last 15 games. Since his Jan. 16 when he had his first double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds against Boston University, Gregory has averaged 12.8 points and 9.1 rebounds.
  • During the stretch of 15 games, Gregory did not make less than 50 percent of his shots from the field in a game. He scored fewer than 10 points just twice, both time when he was limited by fouls.

Rare Company
  • Jarred Jones scored his 1,000th career point in the first half at Lafayette on Jan. 28, becoming the 36th player in school history to cross the plateau.
  • That itself put him in rarefied air, but he is also just the second player to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 steals, 100 assists and 100 blocked shots in a career. Erik Etherly (2010-13) had 1,245, 699, 121 and 121.
  • Jones is one of just five active players in NCAA Division I (per Sports-Reference.com) to hit those numbers. The group includes Tim Coleman (NJIT), Jerome Frink (Fla. Int'l 2012-14; LIU Brooklyn 2015-17),  Jones, Reggie Upshaw (Middle Tennessee) and Tim Williams (Samford 2012-14; New Mexico 2015-17).

The Family Business
  • Jarred Jones and his younger sister, Brionna, are both standouts for their NCAA Division I teams. Brionna leads the third-ranked University of Maryland with averages of 19.8 and 10.8 (through game on 3/7). Younger sister Stephanie is a freshman for the Terps, as well, averaging 3.9 points per game.

Defensive Improvements
  • Last year, Loyola was 261st in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (75.3 points allowed per game), and it was even worse in opponent 3-point field-goal percentage (307th, .372).
  • This year, opponents are averaging 68.4 points per game and shooting just .334 (181-of-542) from 3-point range. Those numbers rank 79th and 90th in NCAA Division I through games of March 13.

Up Next
  • The winner of the Loyola-George Mason game will play in the CBI Quarterfinals on Monday, March 20.
