WILMINGTON, N.C. - Loyola University Maryland volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-19) to the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Saturday in its season-opener at Hanover Hall.

Loyola (0-1, 0-0 Patriot League) was led by Ann Ernst with 10 kills and nine digs. Haley Puddy collected 10 kills as well, to tie the team best for the match. Molly Werts held the team-high 12 digs with 14 assists.

Maddy Kline led UNCW (1-0, 0-0 CAA) with 11 kills. Brynn Montgomery contributed 29 assists and 13 digs.

The Greyhounds were first to score to open the match but the Seahawks answered quickly. The score went back and forth until UNCW went on a five-point run to take the lead 12-5 and Loyola was unable to close the deficit. UNCW finished the set with three-straight points to end 25-13.

In the beginning of the second set Loyola got on the board quickly with the first tally. The Seahawks tied the score with 1-1. The set stayed tight with back-to-back points and the Greyhounds maintained the lead or a tied score until UNCW pulled forward 7-6. Loyola answered, reclaiming the lead. The back-to-back tight scoring continued through the set with the largest deficit reaching three points. UNCW went on a five-point run to bring it to 16-14 and Loyola was unable to regain the lead. Two consecutive Greyhound points late in the set weren't enough to top the Seahawks as they finished 25-23.

UNCW opened the third set with a point on the board. The Greyhounds kept the tally tied at 4-4. It was a seven-point run that put the Seahawks comfortably in the lead, which remained for the rest of the set. Two service aces in a row for UNCW solidified the set win. Loyola was able to tally three consecutively to start a short run but it wasn't enough to top UNCW with a match-winning 25-19 set.

Loyola will face Davidson College today at 4:30 p.m. in Wilmington, N.C.
