Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

  • Loyola University Maryland women's soccer plays its fourth game in 11 days on Saturday, October 2, 2018.
  • The Greyhounds head to New England to face College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
  • Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Smith Soccer Stadium.
  • The game will stream live on the Patriot League Network.
  • After starting the season with three games on the road, Loyola played eight of 10 contests at home. The October 6 game at Holy Cross starts a stretch of three of five on the road. Naomi Meiburger is in her fifth season as the head coach at Loyola. She is joined on the sidelines by third-year assistants Kevin Dempsey and Morgan Ruhl and volunteer assistant coach Lacey Phillips.
  • The Greyhounds' 2018 women's soccer roster includes 19 returners with previous experience at Loyola, a transfer and eight freshmen.
  • The 2018 season is Loyola's ninth at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Looking Back

  • Four Loyola women's soccer players scored goals Monday night, and the Greyhounds downed visiting Delaware State, 5-1.
  • Sarah Bayer opened the scoring less than three minutes into the non-conference match. Maddie Hart won control of a ball in the defensive end for Loyola and sent a pass to Kayleigh Gallagher who treaded a through-ball to Bayer.
  • Jourdan Ziff added a goal less than 20 minutes later, and Ann-Kathrin Wolfram scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute, one-timing a back-heel goal.
  • Hannah Hoefs converted a penalty kick for the Greyhounds two minutes into the second half, and Loyola added an own goal later.
  • Delaware State's only goal of the game came on a late penalty kick.

Series History

  • Loyola and Holy Cross will meet for the sixth time in series history when the teams take the field on Saturday. All of the previous five appearances have come since Loyola joined the Patriot League for the 2013-2014 season.
  • The Greyhounds recorded their first victory over the Crusaders in a 1-0 win on October 29, 2016, in the 2016 regular-season finale, the most-recent meeting in Worcester, Massachusetts.
  • Maddie Hart had a penalty kick saved by Holy Cross' Brooke Holle, but the hard shot rebounded to wide of the left post where an onrushing Maddie Boccio one-timed it to the far post to stake Loyola to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
  • Last year, the teams battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Sumer Rahe making eight saves in goal for the Greyhounds. The teams combined for 27 shots, distributed nearly evenly with Loyola attempting 14.

About The Crusaders

  • Holy Cross comes into the Saturday match with a 3-8-0 overall record and a 1-3-0 Patriot League mark. The Crusaders' three points in the conference standings are tied with Loyola and Lafayette College for sixth place.
  • Holy Cross has wins over Fordham University (1-0), Saint Peter's University (5-1) and Lafayette (2-0) this season.
  • Carly Flahive leads Holy Cross with four goals and eight points, while Ang Seslija has three assists and a goal for five points.
  • Sophia Lettieri has played every minute in goal for the Crusaders this season, registering a 1.43 goals-against average with a .768 saves percentage.

Goal Outburst

  • Loyola finished with a 5-1 win on Monday night in its non-conference finale against Delaware State University. The five goals were the most Loyola has scored in a match since it beat Saint Peter's, 6-0, on October 5, 2012.
  • Four different players scored goals against the Hornets with the Greyhounds also recording an own-goal tally.

Scoring On A Tough D

  • Hannah Hoefs' goal against Army West Point on Saturday was just the sixth the Black Knights have allowed this season. It was the first Army West Point has allowed in Patriot League play (four matches) thus far in 2018. The Black Knights entered the weekend ranked 11th in NCAA Division I in goals-allowed average.

Four For Hannah

  • Hannah Hoefs tallied her fourth goal of the season on Monday and her second in as many games. She converted a penalty kick, her second of the season, against Delaware State. On Saturday versus Army West Point, Hoefs  notched her second goal which counted as the eventual game-winner. She one-timed a corner kick by Nicole Rivas that was headed on by Kate Reese past Army West Point goalkeeper Sydney Cassillia.
  • Hoefs also had an assist versus Delaware State and is now sixth in the Patriot League in points (10) and points per game (0.83). Her four goals are tied for fifth in the conference.

Coaches Corner

  • "Another big conference road contest looms ahead for the team. Coming off back-to-back wins has really given us a boost of confidence. The strength of this group really is in the team; I feel very comfortable with all 28 players and their ability to contribute as the game presents itself. This is a rarity in sports to have such a solid team top to bottom with an array of skills at our disposal. I am excited to have a few days to train now and prepare for what will surely be another close Patriot League contest. " - Head Coach Naomi Meiburger
