Big Blocking Effort Helps Volleyball Sweep Binghamton

ARLINGTON, Texas – Loyola University Maryland volleyball notched a school record for blocks in a three-set match on Friday, totaling 12 in a 25-23, 25-21, 25-11 victory over Binghamton University Friday evening in the Maverick Classic.

Alisah Cash led the Greyhounds (3-2 overall) with eight total blocks, while Haley Puddy and Cat Vaccaro had five and four, respectively.

The 12 blocks snapped the previous best of 11 set in a 2008 three-set win over Morgan State University.

Offensively, the Greyhounds had five players with five or more kills, led by eight each from Abby Hamilton and Ann Ernst. Puddy added seven, and Vaccaro had six. Katie Forsythe led all players with 21 digs, while Molly Werts had 20 assists for the Greyhounds.

Binghamton (0-4) took a 23-21 lead in the first set on a Gaby Alicea kill, but the Greyhounds sided out after a Bearcats service error.

Loyola then forced three-straight attack errors, the last coming on a Cash-Vaccaro block to give the Greyhounds the first set, 25-23.

With that momentum in its favor, Loyola jumped out to an 8-4 lead on another Binghamton service error in the second set. The Bearcats pulled within a point, 10-9, on an Alicea kill, but Loyola tallied seven of the next eight points to extend its advantage to seven, 17-10, when Vaccaro scored on a kill.

The Bearcats closed the gap to three, 19-16, but Loyola pushed ahead with sideouts to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Loyola scored the third set's first eight points to take command early. The Greyhounds posted five of their blocks in the final stanza en route to the sweep.

The Greyhounds are back in action at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern)/1:30 p.m. (Central) on Saturday to wrap up the tournament against host UT Arlington. Earlier Saturday, Loyola lost in four sets to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
