WASHINGTON, D.C. – Georgetown University hit .350 to Loyola University Maryland's .133, and the Hoyas earned a 25-18, 25-9, 25-23 non-conference victory on Saturday evening in McDonough Arena.
Â
The Hoyas (7-5 overall) had just eight hitting errors in the match and only four combined in the opening two sets.
Â
Loyola (4-8) scored five points in a row during the opening frame, two coming on
Cat Vaccaro kills to take a 17-15 lead and force a Hoyas timeout. Georgetown sided out with an Alyssa Sinnette kill and evened the match at 17-17 on a Loyola attack error, but
Alisah Cash put away a Georgetown overpass with a kill to give Loyola a one-point advantage.
Â
That lead was short-lived, however, as it would be Loyola's last point of the set. Georgetown scored eight-straight to take a 1-0 lead in the match. It carried that momentum in the second stanza as it hit .500 to dominate the scoring.
Â
Loyola trailed, 17-12, in the third, but a
Molly Werts kill got it within two, 18-16, before an attack error pushed the Hoyas back up three.
Â
Haley Puddy later had a kill to get the Greyhounds within one, 19-18, but the Hoyas did not let them draw even at that point.
Â
Loyola would tie the set at 23-23 after kills by Vaccaro and
Ann Ernst, but Georgetown had two-straight points to close the match in three.
Â
Vaccaro led the Greyhounds with seven kills, and
Katie Forsythe had a team-high 15 digs.
Â
Loyola opens its sixth season in the Patriot League next weekend when it travels to the Lehigh Valley to face Lehigh University and Lafayette College.
