Series History

  • Loyola and Navy will meet for the 14th time as women's soccer opponents when the teams take the field on Friday night. The Midshipmen lead the all-time series between the programs, 7-3-2.
  • Loyola won the first two meetings in 1993 and 1994, shutting out the Midshipmen, 2-0 and 3-0, respectively. The Greyhounds went on to drop the next five matches, before ending the 2014 season's regular season matchup in a draw. The two teams met again in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Patriot League Tournament, where Navy posted a 4-1 win.
  • The Greyhounds won the 2016 Patriot League regular-season meeting on September 24 when Casey McKenzie scored in the second overtime period to give Loyola a 2-1 victory. Morgan Crable broke up a Navy counterattack attempt midway through the second overtime, and Alice Regan sent a long pass ahead to McKenzie who played give-and-go with Jourdan Ziff. McKenzie's hard, low shot from 30 yards in front of the goal after a Ziff feed went in for the game-winner.
  • Earlier in the match, Ziff was on the scoring end of a McKenzie pass to put Loyola in front, 1-0. Cadie Higgison equalized for the Midshipmen in the 85th minute, forcing overtime.
  • Last season, the teams were scoreless at halftime before Navy broke out for four second-half goals en route to a 4-0 victory.

To Be Tested Early

  • Loyola will face three teams picked in the top-four of the Patriot League Preseason Poll in its first three conference games. Colgate (Sept. 15) was tabbed third, while the U.S. Naval Academy (Sept. 21) was picked as the preseason favorite. Bucknell (Sept. 26) was selected fourth.

Go To The Corner

  • As a team, Loyola has been adept at garnering corner kicks this season, taking 46 through eight matches. The Greyhounds 46 overall are third-most in the Patriot League (Navy, 55; Bucknell, 50). Meanwhile, Loyola's 5.75 per game rank first in the conference (Navy & Bucknell, 5.55).

Freshman Breaks Through

  • Sarah Bayer has been a key part of the Greyhounds' offense all season, but she broke through into the scoring column with three in the span of two games.. Her assist on a Jourdan Ziff goal in the second half against Towson was her first collegiate point.
  • She then tallied her first goal with a terrific run past two Mount St. Mary's defenders to give the Greyhounds the eventual game-winner on Sunday.

Two For Ziff

  • Jourdan Ziff had the second multi-goal game of her career against Towson, tying her career-high in goals from a 2016 game at American University. Ziff tallied two scores in the second half to bring the Greyhounds level against the Tigers.
  • She then had a key outlet pass to Sarah Bayer, setting up her eventual game-winning goal at Mount St. Mary's.

Coaches Corner

  • "The challenge for us this week is finding a way to convert all our opportunities to results. We continue to learn and improve each week, and I really feel this team are at a tipping point and I am anxious to see them break a game open. Navy will be a tough opponent for us as they always are, but I feel good playing on our home field and knowing we will be well prepared for them. We have to continue to grind and do the small things right and believe the results will follow. It is still early on conference play and I think will be a very tight league top to bottom this year.
