FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Loyola University Maryland golf team opened its 2018-19 season today and sits in fifth place of 14 after two rounds of the Doc Gimmler at the Bethpage Red Course. The Greyhounds have a team score of 10-over 570.

Sophomore
Evan Brown sits tied for 11th overall after firing a 2-over 72 through the first round and a 1-under 69 through the second. He leads the Greyhounds into tomorrow's final round and sits two strokes out of the top five with a 1-over 141.

All five scoring Greyhounds shot within two strokes of each other through the opening round, with senior
Erick Alonso and junior
Preston Ball pacing Loyola with a pair of 1-over 71s. Sophomores
Brandon Berry and
Evan Brown each turned in matching 72s, while classmate
Brett Inserra shot a 73 through the first round.

Alonso matched his first-round score, turning in a second-straight 71 to sit tied with Berry and three others at 14th, all at 2-over 142. Berry shaved two strokes off of his first round and carded an even 70 through the second round.

Ball will enter tomorrow's final round in a tie for 29th at 5-over 145 (71-74), while Inserra is tied for 53rd at 149 (73-76).

The Greyhounds also have sophomore
Nick Mejia and freshman
Mike McCarthy competing as individuals. Mejia shot a 74 and a 71, respectively, and sits tied with Ball for 29th overall at 145, while McCarthy is 73rd overall. He turned in a 76 on his first collegiate round and followed it up with a 78 through the second.

Rhode Island leads the team race with an even two-round score of 560, while Connecticut is second at 2-over 562, Johnson & Wales is third at 4-over 564 and Yale is fourth at 6-over 566. Loyola is six strokes out of the top three and 10 back from the leader.

Individually, Rhode Island's Dawson Jones and Connecticut's Nick Harrington are atop the leaderboard with matching 4-under 136s. Yale's James Nicholas rounds out the top three at 3-under 137.

Loyola will return to the course tomorrow morning for the final round.
