Sharp Shooting From 3-Point Range Keys Senior Day Win For Men’s Hoops

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland had the second-best 3-point shooting performance in the nation this year, making 75 percent of its shots from behind the arc (12 of 16) on Saturday night as it defeated visiting Lehigh University, 92-73, to close out the regular-season.

Jaylin Andrews made five of those 3-poitners while scoring a career-high 21 points as one of five Greyhounds in double-figures. Before the game, the Greyhounds honored their two seniors – James Fives and Sam Norton – in a ceremony.

As a result, Loyola (11-20 overall, 7-11 Patriot League) finished tied for seventh place in the Patriot League regular-season standings. The Greyhounds will be the No. 9 seed in the upcoming conference championships and travel to eight-seeded Boston University (14-17, 7-11) for a first-round matchup on Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m.

The Greyhounds' 3-point performance on Saturday night is the best in school history for by a team that made more than 10 of its attempts. It is second overall behind a 7 of 8 (.778) performance against Canisius College on January 17, 1992.

Loyola's 75 percent mark from behind the arc is the second-best nationally this season for teams that made 10 or more in a game. Ironically, only Lehigh had a better outing this year when it shot 78.6 percent (11 of 14) against Lafayette College in January.

In addition to Andrews' game-high 21 points, Andrew Kostecka scored 19 and Isaiah Hart added 18. Kenneth Jones posted 15 points, and Casmir Ochiaka had his third double-double this season with 11 points and 11 rebounds in just 24 minutes.

Lehigh (19-10, 12-6) had an early four-point lead in the opening four minutes, but an 8-0 run by the Greyhounds put Loyola in front 12-8 on Andrews' second three of the game, and Loyola led for tre remainder of the game.

The Mountain Hawks got within one on a Lance Tejada three with 8:49 to go in the first half and again with 6:28 on the clock before halftime when Jordan Cohen knocked down a three, but Andrews and Jones responded with threes to stretch the margin back to four on each occasion.

An Andrews three at 3:41 gave Loyola its first double-digit lead of the game shortly before halftime, and Hart scored in the paint 30 ticks before the break to make it a 46-37 halftime lead.

Andrews scored on the Greyhounds' second possession of the second half, and Loyola led by 10 or more for the remainder of the game.

Loyola raised its season 3-point percentage by more than 10 points in the game; it entered shooting a Patriot League low 32.9 percent.

The 92 points were the most Loyola has scored this season. The total is the second-highest the Greyhounds have produced in a Patriot League game since joining the conference in 2013-14 after posting 100 in a double-overtime win at the U.S. Military Academy in 2016.

Loyola had 20 assists and 12 steals in the game. Hart led the way with seven assists, while Jones added five. Kostecka and Jones each had three steals.

Cohen and Kyle Leufroy led Lehigh with 16 points each.
