Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

  • Loyola University Maryland starts a three-game homestand on Saturday, March 30, when it hosts Colgate University at 1 p.m.
  • The game will stream on the Patriot League Network.
  • Dating back to March 23, 2016, Loyola is averaging 12.54 goals over its last 52 games. The Greyhounds have scored less than 10 only seven times in that span.
  • Pat Spencer now holds the Loyola and Patriot League career records in both assists (196) and points (322). He set the Loyola assists mark in 2018 and the points record in 2019 against Navy.
  • Kevin Lindley finished his freshman season ranked fourth in NCAA Division I, converting 52.1 percent of his shots in 2018. He has converted 32 of 62 shots this year, good for 51.6 percent.
  • Jacob Stover has 511 career saves, seventh on the NCAA's active leader board.
  • Pat Spencer has recorded two or more points in all but two of the 59 games to start his collegiate career, and he has 36 multi-goal and 48 multi-assist games. He has scored a point in all 58 outings.
  • Chase Scanlan leads all NCAA Division I midfielders with 24 goals.

Last Time Out

  • Loyola got eight points from Pat Spencer, a 17 of 23 performance from Bailey Savio on faceoffs and 15 saves by Jacob Stover in goal on Saturday as the Greyhounds posted a 12-7 victory over host Bucknell.
  • Kevin Lindley dodged off the wing for the game's first goal, putting Loyola on the board 3:43 into the first quarter, and Savio sparked the next goal.
  • He won the ensuing faceoff cleanly and threw it to Spencer who dropped it to Scanlan for a shot that went through the Bucknell goalkeeper's legs eight seconds after Lindley's tally. It was one of four times that Savio faceoff wins would lead directly to goals in less than 15 seconds.
  • Only 55 seconds after Scanlan's goal, Spencer fed from behind the goal while Loyola was on extra-man, and he hit a cutting Lindley for a goal at 10:04.
  • Loyola made it a four-goal lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter as John Duffy split dodged a defender and threw to Spencer on the low left side for his first goal of the day. The Greyhounds added another goal before the end of the quarter as Savio won the draw, and Spencer threw Scanlan for a goal.
  • In The Polls
  • Loyola remained number six in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse media version on March 23.

Series History

  • Loyola and Colgate will play for the sixth time when the teams take the field on Saturday.
  • The Greyhounds lead the all-time series 5-1 and have won the last three meetings.
  • Last year, Colgate scored just four goals in settled six-on-six offense, one in the final five seconds of regulation, and Loyola posted an 11-7 win over the host Raiders on March 31.
  • The Greyhounds forced 19 Colgate turnovers, and Jacob Stover made 10 saves, three coming on 1-versus-1 opportunities during the fourth quarter.
  • Offensively, Jay Drapeau matched his career-high with four goals, a total that came on just six shots, while Pat Spencer had two goals and four assists for the Greyhounds. John Duffy added two goals and an assist.

Conference & National Honors

  • After the Greyhounds' win at Bucknell, Pat Spencer (Offensive Player), Bailey Savio (Faceoff Specialist) and Chase Scanlan (Rookie) earned Patriot League Weekly Awards. Spencer's was the ninth of his career – more than any player in conference history – and fourth this season, while Savio picked up his second of 2019 and third overall. Scanlan has earned three of the last four rookie awards.
  • Spencer was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Team of the Week for the fifth time this year.

King Of Points

  • Pat Spencer set the Loyola career record for points on March 19, 2019, breaking the mark of 311 set by Gary Hanley from 1978-81. Spencer tied Hanley with an unassisted goal 5:45 before halftime against Navy, and he broke the points record with an assist on a Kevin Lindley transition goal 35 seconds before the break.

Chart Topping

  • Spencer now holds both the Patriot League and Loyola records for points (322) and assists (196) and is fourth all-time at the school in goals (126).
  • Spencer has 126 goals through 59 career games, a total ranked fourth; Mike Sawyer (2009, 2011-13) stands third at 128, behind Pat Lamon (133, 1983-86) and Hanley (151). The  2017 and 2018 Tewaaraton Award finalist, he is first among active NCAA Division I players in assists, goals and points.
  • Against Virginia in the 2018 NCAA First Round game, Spencer moved into the top-10 of NCAA Division I history in assists. He is currently fifth all-time with 196, eight back of Cornell's Rob Pannell (2009-13) in fourth with 204.
  • At Bucknell, Spencer moved into the top 10 to pass Yale's Ben Reeves (316, 2015-18) and Brown's Darren Lowe (316, 1989-92), Brown's Dylan Molly (318, 2014-17) and Tim Nelson (320, North Carolina State, 1982; Syracuse, 1983-85). Spencer is now seventh with 322 points, 21 back of Air Force's Joe Vasta for sixth.

Alone At The Top

  • Pat Spencer set the Loyola single-season assist and points records during the 2018 NCAA First Round win over Virginia. He assisted on a Kevin Lindley goal in the first two minutes of the second quarter, breaking his own assist record of 55 set last season. His assist on a Lindley goal to start scoring in the second half was his 90th point of the year, breaking the record of 89 set in 1981 by Gary Hanley and matched in 2016 by Spencer. He finished the year with 35 goals, 59 assists and 94 points.
  • Spencer became Loyola's all-time leader in assists (now 196 in 58 career games) during the 2018 Patriot League Championship Game, breaking the mark of 160 set by Hanley in 1981.
  • In the Patriot League Semifinals, Spencer set the Patriot League record for career points (now with 322q), passing Bucknell University's Chris Cara (2002-05). Earlier in the 2018 season, he set the Patriot League's all-time assist record.

Veteran In Goal

  • Jacob Stover returns for his fourth season as a starter at Loyola, having played 2,905 minutes between the pipes for the Greyhounds. The 2018 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year 2019 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook  Preseason All-American has a career 8.39 goals-against average in 53 games.
  • Stover has made saves on 55.7 percent of the shots on goal he has faced and has a 38-12 career record for the Greyhounds.
  • He closed the 2018 season with one of the best performances of his career. Stover made a career-best 19 saves against Yale University in the NCAA Quarterfinals while yielding only eight goals to the Bulldogs.
  • He has picked up where he left off, making 18 saves in 2019 season-opener against Virginia, 12 versus Johns Hopkins, 18 at Rutgers University, 13 at Towson and 11 versus Holy Cross, 15 at Duke, 14 versus Navy and 15 at Bucknell to give him 135 in his last nine games (15.0 per game).
  • Stover's .595 saves percentage is No. 5 in NCAA Division I this year.

Lindley Leading

  • Kevin Lindley has been on fire to start the 2019 season, scoring 32 goals in eight games, and he is second in NCAA Division I with 4.00 goals per game. He has tallied four or more in all but two of the contests, including six at Towson and versus Holy Cross and five versus Virginia and Navy.
  • Lindley finished his freshman season in 2018 with 37 goals, all but five of which were unassisted. Three of those unassisted goals came after Lindley picked up ground balls on rebounds of saved shots and scored immediately.  In the 2019 season-opener against Virginia, Lindley scored five goals, three unassisted off dodges. With one unassisted versus Holy Cross, he has six already this year.
  • He is third on the active career leader with 2.76 goals per game.

Strong Start

  • Chase Scanlan is off to a solid start to his Loyola career, scoring 24 goals to go with nine assists for 33 points in six games. He is tied for 12th nationally with 3.0 goals per game, tops amongst all NCAA Division I freshmen, and his 24 goals are also most by a first-year player. He is also first among freshmen with 4.13 points per game.
  • Scanlan has earned three Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors this season.
  • The freshman from Irving, New York, also leads all NCAA Division I midfielders with 3.0 goals per game this season.

Two In Second

  • Loyola players are second in both point and goals per game. Pat Spencer is second in points (7.0), while Kevin Lindley checks in at the same spot in goals (4.0) per game.
  • Spencer is also fourth in assists per game (3.63) and sixth in goals per game (3.38). He is the only player ranked in the top-10 of goals, assists and points per game.

Three Of The Top

  • Three Loyola players are ranked in the top-12 nationally in goals per game midway through the 2019 season. Kevin Lindley is second (4.00), Pat Spencer is tied for sixth (3.38) and Chase Scanlan is tied for 12th (3.0).
  • Only one other team – Georgetown with Daniel Bucaro (fifth, 3.56) and Jake Carraway (T-12th, 3.0) – has two players ranked amongst the top 12 and ties.

Down But Not Out

  • Loyola has taken 22 penalties in eight games this year, but the Greyhounds have given up just four extra-man goals. They are killing penalties 81.8 percent of the time, good for third in the nation. Only Rutgers (86.4) and Manhattan (85.0) are better on man-down this season.

Shot Selection

  • Loyola finished the 2018 season with a .351 shooting percentage this season marking just the third time the Greyhounds have shot 30 percent or better in the last 10 seasons (.312 in 2014; .301 in 2017). Loyola's shot percentage led the Patriot League and was sixth in NCAA Division I. Of the players on Loyola's starting attacker and first and second midfields, all nine shot .271 or better, and six of that group were at .325 or higher.
  • In the first eight games of 2019, the Greyhounds have shot .376 overall, ranking third in NCAA Division I.

Defense Making A Stand

  • Over the last 35 games (10 in 2017, 17 in 2018, 8 in 2019) – beginning with a March 18, 2017 win over the U.S. Naval Academy – Loyola's defense has allowed just 8.17 goals per game. The Greyhounds also have an advantage of 445-553 in turnovers (12.7-15.8) as they have gone 26-8 during the stretch.
  • Of its opponents' 553 turnovers in the last 35 games, Loyola has caused 321.

Youthful On Close D

  • Loyola's starting defense against Navy – Paul Volante, John Railey and Cam Wyers – came into the game with a combined 41 games of collegiate experience prior to this year, all belonging to Volante, a senior and three-year starter. Wyers has started every game of his freshman year thus far, and Railey made his first career start after missing 2017 and 2018 due to injury. Wyers and Railey each had three caused turnovers against the Midshipmen.

Toomey's Team

  • Charley Toomey is in his 14th year as the head coach at Loyola and his 23rd as a member of the Greyhounds' coaching staff. Overall, he is in his 27th year on the Evergreen campus, including his four seasons as a student-athlete from 1986-90.
  • Toomey has directed the Greyhounds to 95 wins, an average of 12.6 per season (not including this season) since 2012, and has a 140-66 career record. Early in the 2016 season, Toomey became the second coach in program history to reach and cross the 100-win plateau; he stands second on the program's all-time wins chart behind his college coach, Dave Cottle (181-70, 1983-2001).
  • As a head coach, Toomey has coached 38 USILA All-Americans, 71 all-conference selections, 18 conference positional or players or rookies of the year, four Tewaaraton Award finalists and 13 USILA Scholar All-Americans.
  • In January 2019, Toomey was named to the coaching staff of the U.S. Men's National Team as an assistant coach. He will serve with Team USA in preparation for, and competition in, the 2022 World Championships in British Columbia. He was also enshrined in the USLacrosse Chesapeake Chapter Hall of Fame in January 2019 for his accomplishments as a player and a coach.

Get To Ten

  • Since Charley Toomey became head coach at Loyola in 2006, the Greyhounds have scored 10 or more goals on 126 occasions; Loyola has won 81.0 percent of those games (102-24).

Preseason Prognostications

  • Loyola was picked as the Patriot League favorite for the sixth time in as many years since joining the conference in 2014, picking up all of the available first-place votes.
  • Pat Spencer was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and he was joined on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team by John Duffy and Jacob Stover.
  • Spencer was also named the Preseason National Player of the Year by Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Yearbook  and Lacrosse Magazine. He was named the Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America First Team, while Stover and long-stick midfielder Ryan McNulty earned honorable mention.

Up Next

  • The Greyhounds continue their three-game homestand at Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 6, when they host the first game of a Loyola lacrosse doubleheader with an 11 a.m. game against Lehigh University. The Greyhounds women then play host to the U.S. Naval Academy at 3 p.m.
