BALTIMORE – Three Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse players –
Chase Scanlan,
Pat Spencer and
Jacob Stover – earned All-America honors from
Inside Lacrosse, the publication announced on Sunday evening.
Spencer was named to the first team, while Scanlan and Stover each earned second-team recognition. The team is in its third year of existence, and Spencer has earned first-team honors all three of the years, the only player to have accomplished the feat.
On Saturday in Loyola's 15-13 victory over Syracuse University in the NCAA Championships First Round, Spencer became the NCAA's career leader in assists and moved into second in all-time points. With an assist on
P.J. Brown's game-tying goal with 11:02 to play in the fourth quarter, Spencer registered the 226
th of his career, passing University at Albany's Lyle Thompson for first all-time.
The four-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year has scored 43 points to go with a school-record 60 goals this season, becoming the first player in Loyola history to post 100 or more points in a season. Spencer had nine points on three goals and six assists Saturday against Syracuse. Earlier this season, Spencer set the Loyola record for career points and now has 369, second in NCAA history to Thompson's 400. He has scored seven or more points in 10 of the Greyhounds' 16 games this year.
Scanlan has set multiple records this season at Loyola and is one of only two freshmen to be on the first three of the Inside Lacrosse teams. Saturday, he finished with two goals and an assist against the Orange, extending his Loyola freshman record to 42 goals while also setting the school single-season record for goals by a midfielder that was held for one year by
Jay Drapeau (41, 2018).
In the 16 games the Greyhounds have played this season, Scanlan has scored 42 goals to go with 15 assists for 47 points. He leads all NCAA Division I midfielders in goals scored this season.
Stover has put together one of the top seasons by a Loyola goalkeeper in school history; he is second in NCAA Division I in saves percentage, stopping 59.1 percent of the shots on goal he has faced this season. His 231 saves are tied for third in school single-season history and are the most since Tim McGeeney had 245 in 1995.
The two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year has posted 11 or more saves in all 16 of the Greyhounds games this season, a streak that is at 17 dating back to last season's NCAA Quarterfinal. He posted 17 on Saturday in the Greyhounds' win over the Orange, one off his season-high of 18 that came against the University of Virginia and Rutgers University and two away from his career-best that he posted in that quarterfinal versus Yale University.
Loyola will be back in action on Sunday, May 19, when it plays Penn State University in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The game will take place at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, and it will be televised live on ESPNU.
