BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's soccer returns to Ridley Athletic Complex on Sunday to host Quinnipiac in the first matchup between the two sides in 19 years. The Greyhounds are coming off a 4-0 setback at VCU on Thursday night.

Last Time Out

  • Loyola stayed even for 60 minutes on Thursday with a VCU squad coming off back-to-back Atlantic 10 title game appearances, but the host Rams scored four times in the final half hour to send the Greyhounds to their first loss of 2019.
  • VCU led 24-1 in shots, 7-1 in shots on goal and 9-0 in corner kicks.
  • Sarah Bayer had Loyola's only shot in the 75th minute, forcing a diving save out of VCU GK Grace Young. The Rams scored their second goal 26 seconds later, beginning a stretch of three goals in 3:10 of game action.
  • Julia Gray made a sliding play on the goal line in the 67th minute to block  a VCU shot that was destined for the back of the net.
  • Lily Andres made three saves for a second-straight game in goal.

Series History

  • This will be the first regular season meeting between the two teams.
  • The only previous matchup came at Quinnipiac in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Nov. 4, 2000, with the Bobcats managing a 2-1 victory in overtime.
  • Current head coach Joe Mallia was in the midst of the third season of his previous seven-year stint at Loyola in 2000. The Greyhounds won their first of five-consecutive MAAC championships that season, finishing the year 15-5 (9-0 MAAC).

  • Quinnipiac has started 2019 with a pair of 1-0 victories at home, topping Bryant in overtime last Sunday and besting Rhode Island on Wednesday..
  • R-Jr. F Kelsey Goldring, the co-MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2017, has scored both goals for the Bobcats, while Fr. GK Meaghan Phillips has totaled five saves across the two games.
  • Quinnipiac is off to its best start since 2015, and has started the year with back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1993.

  • Two Greyhounds earned their first starts of the season at VCU on Thursday, with Kaleigh Gallagher and Ariel Tillman each cracking the starting XI.
  • Tillman had the primary assist on Sarah Bayer's OT winner over Seton Hall last Sunday. She had four starts as a freshman in 2018.
  • Gallagher started 14 of 17 games last season, finishing with one goal and three assists on the year.

  • Loyola has won five of its last six games against non-conference opponents at Ridley Athletic Complex dating back to Aug. 24, 2017.
  • The Greyhounds were 3-1 against non-conference teams, and they were 5-4 overall in their nine games at Ridley last season.

  • Jen Moutenot, Vanessa Alessi and Nicole Thomas each logged their first appearances of 2019 in the second half of Thursday's contest at VCU. 
  • Alessi's appearance was her 10th overall at Loyola., while Thomas made her collegiate debut.
