Excellent Final Round Lifts Golf To Third, Brown To Tie For Second In Arizona

Evan Brown tied for second at the Loyola Intercollegiate.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Loyola University Maryland shot a final-round 11-under par 277 as a team Monday to move up from fifth to third in the Loyola Intercollegiate final standings, while Evan Brown went 6-under to tie for second as an individual at Palm Valley Golf Club.

Brown had just one over-par hole, the par-4 first hole, but he mitigated that with a pair of eagles and three birdies to get to 10-under for the tournament and match Loyola Marymount's Gavin Cohen for second place. Delaware's Roberto Nieves had a bogey-free round of 5-under to finish at 11-under and take medalist honors.

Drake won the team race at 15-under par for the three rounds, while Eastern Michigan finished one stroke behind the Bulldogs and one ahead of the Greyhounds (-13). Loyola Marymount was fourth at 10-under.

Brown's day opened on the fourth hole with the shotgun start, and he posted five pars before eagling the par-4 10th hole. He then birdied 14, 15 and 17 to get to 5-under for Monday before giving a stroke back on the first hole.

Brown, however, came right back to eagle the 515-yard, par-5 second hole and par the third to post his 6-under 66. He finished the tournament ranked third in par-3 scoring (2.92) and tied for third on the par fives (-8).

Carlo Pizzano had his best collegiate finish at the event, shooting 1-under on Monday to get to 5-under for the tournament and tie for eighth place. After opening with an even-par 72 on Saturday, the freshman posted two under-par rounds with a 68 Sunday and a 71 today.

Matt Malits put together his second-best round of the season on Monday, carding an eagle and a birdie over his final five holes to finish at 3-under 69. That helped him get to a tie for 71st for the tournament.

Pizzano's 1-under 71 on Monday was matched by Brandon Berry who had his best round of the tournament over the final 18. Barry had three birdies on the course's front nine and finished tied for 71st.

Turner Foster had three birdies in a string of five holes on the back nine, but two double bogeys during his round set him back to a 3-over par finish on Monday; Foster tied for 56th overall.

Playing as an individual, Nick Mejia had his best round of the event on Monday, as well, shooting 1-over 73 and finishing tied for 97th.

Loyola returns to the Eastern Time Zone for its next tournament. The Greyhounds will take a Spring Break trip to South Florida where they will host the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, March 2-3, at Fort Lauderdale Country Club.
