NEW ORLEANS – Loyola University Maryland rising senior Senna Ohlsson became the first Greyhounds runner to be named a Division I Track & Field All-Academic Athlete by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday.
 
As a team, the Greyhounds were honored, as well, garnering USTFCCCA All-Academic Team recognition. Loyola put together a 3.718 grade-point average during the 2019-20 academic year, raising their cumulative GPA to 3.647 at the end of the spring term. The cumulative mark put the Greyhounds in the top-25 of teams nationally for GPAs.
 
All 35 members of the team were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last month.
 
Individually, Ohlsson became the first Loyola track and field student-athlete to earn the recognition at the national level from the USTFCCCA.
 
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a 3.25 or better GPA while also ranking in the top-96 in any NCAA Championships event at the national level.
 
The biology and English major easily checked both boxes as the three-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree finished 2019-20 with a 3.808 GPA.
 
She won her third Patriot League 800-meter title, winning the indoor race for the second time in as many years. Ohlsson then became the first Loyola runner to win an ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championship, taking top honors at the same distance.
 
Ohlsson set the school record in the 800 twice at the ECAC Championships, first running 2:07.94 in the preliminaries before going 2:07.07 in the final for the win. She has run seven of the 10 fastest 800-meter times indoors at Loyola, and she has six of the 10 fastest outdoor times in the event.
 
She holds four indoor school records – 500, 600, 800 and 1,000 meters – and she has been on six school-record setting relay teams – the indoor and outdoor 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relays.
