The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer is on the road for just the second time since Sept. 9 this weekend, as the Greyhounds head to New England to face Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.

Last Time Out

  • Kelly Hutton opened the scoring in the 37th minute, and Elizabeth Gallagher netted her first collegiate goal with 2:23 remaining to secure a 2-0 victory for Loyola over Lafayette last Saturday.
  • Paige Sim added three saves in goal while registering her fourth clean sheet of the season for the Greyhounds, who handed the Leopards (2-8-0, 0-4-0 PL) a fourth-straight defeat.
  • Hutton's goal came after a Lafayette foul on the left side of the field. Arín Sigfúsdóttir took the ensuing free kick, and her drive into the box was headed by Hutton straight into the right corner.
  • Sigfúsdóttir's assist was her first collegiate point.
  • Jess Korman assisted on Gallagher's insurance tally in the 88th minute after intercepting a Lafayette pass on the left side.
  • Sim improved to 4-2-1 with a 0.56 GAA and .852 save percentage in seven games at Ridley Athletic Complex this season.
  • Sim (Goalkeeper of the Week) and Gallagher (Rookie of the Week) both received Patriot League awards following their performances.

Offensive Leaders

  • Sarah Mirr (2 G, 2 A) and Ada Clare Tempert (3 G) are tied for the team lead with six points through the season's first 12 games. Mirr had the lone goal for Loyola in a 1-1 draw at Army on Sept. 25, while two of Tempert's three goals have been game winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate).
  • Baylee DeSmit (2 G, 1 A) and Kelly Hutton (2 G, 1 A) both follow with five points apiece. DeSmit also leads the team with 28 shots (16 SOG) on the year.
  • Sixteen different Greyhounds have at least one point on the year. Elizabeth Gallagher became Loyola's eighth different goal scorer last weekend against Lafayette.

Series History

  • Holy Cross leads 3-1-3 in a series which began when Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013.
  • Two goals or fewer have been scored in each of the first seven meetings.
  • Six of seven games have been decided by one goal or fewer, with the lone exception a 2-0 Holy Cross victory back in 2015.
  • Loyola's only win in the series thus far was a 1-0 road triumph in the 2016 regular season finale.
  • The teams played to a 1-1 draw during the last meeting on Sept. 28, 2019 in Baltimore. Sarah Bayer had the lone Loyola goal in the 36th minute.
  • The Greyhounds had a chance to secure all three points late, but a 89th minute penalty kick was saved by Holy Cross goalkeeper Sophia Lettieri.

Scouting Holy Cross

  • The Crusaders (1-10-1, 0-3-1 PL) have lost three-straight Patriot League games to Bucknell (2-0), Lehigh (2-1) and Army (5-1) since opening conference play with a 1-1 draw at American.
  • Holy Cross ranks last in the Patriot League in team goals-against average (2.70 goals allowed/game) and is ninth out of 10 schools in scoring offense (1.0 goals/game).
  • Jr. F Katie Quinn (4 G) and Jr. F Colleen McIlvenna (2 G, 3 A) lead the offense. McIlvenna had the GWG in Holy Cross' lone win, a 3-0 triumph over Bryant on Sept. 5.
  • Fr. GK Olivia Dubin leads the conference in saves per game (6.0) and ranks 12th nationally in total saves (72).
  • Holy Cross was the No. 2 seed in the 2019 Patriot League tournament, qualifying for the postseason for the first time since 2000 that fall.
Quick Notes Entering the Weekend
  • Seven players (Gillian Borton, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim) have started each of the first 12 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Sim has held Patriot League opponents to one goal or fewer in 20 of 21 career starts against conference schools.
  • Gray leads all field players in minutes played (1020). She has played every minute on the backline in five of Loyola's last seven contests.
  • The Greyhounds' lone road victory so far this season was a 2-0 triumph at Howard on Sept. 9. That win was the 100th at Loyola and 150th overall for head coach Joe Mallia.
Recipes for Success
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last 12 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 4-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also undefeated (4-0-1) when leading at halftime this fall. They are 6-0-2 overall in their last eight games when holding an advantage at the intermission.

More on Sim

  • Paige Sim is a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week this season, and she has earned seven weekly awards overall during her first two-plus seasons at Loyola (6x Goalkeeper of the Week, 1x Rookie of the Week).
  • Sim has played 1109 out of a possible 1120 minutes this season, and she has totaled 6+ saves in seven of her 11 appearances.
  • For the year, Sim is 5-5-2 with a 1.14 goals-against average, a .797 save percentage and a conference-high four shutouts. Taking away Loyola's defeats to ACC leaders Clemson and Wake Forest, she is 5-3-2 with a 0.67 GAA and .860 save percentage.

Worth Noting

  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 25 points (10 G, 5 A) in 51 collegiate appearances.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 13 of 17 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 7-4-6 during that stretch.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
Smart Hounds
  • Loyola finished the 2021 spring semester with an impressive 3.604 team GPA. A total of 17 Greyhounds recorded a semester GPA above 3.60, with Gillian Borton, Kaleigh Gallagher, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr and Jenna Nall all posting perfect 4.0 GPA's.
  • Sarah Bayer (biology/speech pathology interdisciplinary major, 3.95 GPA) and Paige Sim (biology major, 3.94 GPA) were both Academic All-Patriot League selections, with Bayer later becoming the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree since 2012.
Looking Ahead
