BALTIMORE –
Aidan Olmstead matched his career-high with five goals, and
Kevin Lindley became Loyola University Maryland's all-time leading goal scorer on Tuesday evening as the Greyhounds used a 5-0 run to start the game to go on to a 16-9 victory over the U.S. Naval Academy in the Patriot League Quarterfinals at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The 16th-ranked Greyhounds will now face the U.S. Military Academy in the semifinals on Friday, May 7, at 7 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Lehigh University's Ulrich Sports Complex. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
Bailey Savio came up huge for the Greyhounds at the faceoff 'X,' winning 21 of 28 restarts with 11 ground balls to help Loyola control a 40-25 advantage off the ground.
Olmstead scored twice as the Greyhounds (8-5 overall) held No. 15 Navy scoreless in the first quarter.
Seth Higgins,
Liam Bateman and
Dan Wigley also scored goals as Loyola took a 5-0 lead with 28 ticks left in the quarter off an unassisted goal by Wigley.
The Midshipmen responded quickly to start the second quarter, tallying a trio of goals by Max Hewitt, Christian Daniel and Nick Cole in the first 3-minutes, 14-seconds to get back within two on Cole's extra-man goal.
Wigley, however, scored his second unassisted tally of the night 29 seconds later, and Olmstead added his third of the game off an
Adam Poitras assist at 10:38 to push the lead to 7-3.
Patrick Skalniak tallied his first of two goals with 4:15 to go in the first half, and Navy was within three, 6-3, but Loyola tallied the last three goals of the quarter to lead 10-4 at the break.
Coming out of a Loyola timeout, Lindley took a Navy short-stick to the top of the offensive box and dodged into the middle where he split a double and scored at 3:31, registering his 152nd career goal, breaking a 39-year record held by Gary Hanley who scored 151 from 1978-81 at Loyola.
Evan James then added an unassisted goal when he picked up a ground ball in front of the goal and scooped it in for a score at 2:22, and Olmstead took a
Peter Swindell feed to score with five seconds left in the half, stretching the lead to six.
Bryason Rhee and Daniel scored in the first 7:09 of the second half to get the Mids back within four, but Swindell's fifth extra-man goal of the season at 2:31 jumpstarted a 4-0 Loyola run that would put the game out of reach.
Wigley posted an assist on a
Riley Seay goal with 1:35 left in the third as he dodged from behind the cage, looked through the defense and threw a skip pass to Seay on the left side. James then added his second goal of the night, again off a ground ball after a
Jack Decker shot was saved.
Olmstead split left against his defender on the left wing, took advantage of the Navy player losing his footing to score at 13:56 in the fourth quarter, making it a 14-6 game.
Cole and Michael Foster posted Navy goals at 11:45 and 9:47, but Lindley came back with his second unassisted goal of the night at 8:58, and Olmstead assisted on a Decker tally as he scored cutting across the face of the goal with 7:40 to play.
Skalniak added the last goal of the game with 3:50 to play, but Navy could not get closer than the final margin.
Sam Shafer made nine saves in goal for the Greyhounds, including two key stops in the first quarter to hold the Midshipmen scoreless during the run
