Let's Play Two

  • Loyola University Maryland volleyball will play a pair of Patriot League matches this weekend, taking on the U.S. Military Academy on Friday evening before facing College of the Holy Cross the following night.
  • The Greyhounds welcome Army West Point at 7 p.m. in Reitz Arena on Friday in a match that will stream live on ESPN+. Saturday, Loyola and Holy Cross will play a neutral-site game at Towson's SECU Arena at 6:30 p.m.; that game will not be streamed.

Best Start

  • Loyola is off to the best start in its program history through 12 matches, going 9-3 in the opening weeks of the season. The previous best was an 8-4 record during the 1982 season.

More Good News

  • Sunday's win over Navy marked the sixth-straight victory for the Greyhounds, dating back to Saturday, September 4, when they started the streak with a 3-0 sweep of Morgan State. The six wins in a row is the longest winning streak for the program since the 1997 season.
  • The victory over the Midshipmen also snapped an 18-match losing streak in the series by the Greyhounds. It was Loyola's first win over Navy since joining the Patriot League in 2013 and its first since the 2009 season.

Freshman Dishing Out Assists

  • Freshman Kacy Sekunda has moved into the role of the Greyhounds' primary setter, posting 358 assists through 12 matches with an average of 9.94 per set. She is second in the Patriot League in assists per set and also is hitting .293 with 40 kills on 99 attempts.
  • Last week, in a pair of three-set wins over Coppin State and Navy, she averaged 12.5 assists per set, posting 75 in the two matches with 39 against the Eagles, 36 versus the Midshipmen. She had double-doubles in both matches with 18 kills against Navy, 10 versus Coppin State.
  • Sekunda was named the Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, September 21, after the performances last week. It marked the second time in as many weeks that she was named the conference's Rookie of the Week.

Ms. MVP

  • Abby Hamilton earned All-Tournament honors at each of the Greyhounds three tournaments this season, picking up the recognition at both the ODU and Towson Invitationals before being named the Most Valuable Player at Dig The District.
  • In Washington, D.C., Hamilton had 43 kills for an average of 4.3 per set, and she also averaged 2.9 digs per set. She opened the tournament by hitting .632 with 12 kills, zero errors and 19 attempts against Maryland Eastern Shore. She then and 12 kills and 12 digs to go with three blocks Friday evening against George Washington. Hamilton then went off for 19 kills, 12 digs and three service aces in the victory over Georgetown.
  • Through 12 matches and 39 sets, Hamilton has more than three times as many attack attempts (513) as the next closest hitter on the team (Cat Vaccaro, 162 attempts). Her 13.15 attack attempts her set at third in NCAA Division I, and she is averaging a career-best 4.23 kills per set, good for second in the Patriot League.
  • Against UMES on September 10, she recorded her 1,000th career kill in just her 75th career match. With 12 more kills, she'll tie Jac Bullock (2010-13) for ninth all-time at Loyola in kills.
  • The native of Colgate, Wisconsin, has averaged 3.46 kills per set in 79 career matches. During her career, she has logged 10 or more kills in 65 of 79 outings with 10 of those contests of nine or fewer coming during her freshman year of 2018.

League-Leading Libero

  • Katie Forsythe has been the class of the Patriot League's liberos since stepping onto the court as a freshman in 2018, and by just about any measure, she has been the class of most liberos nationwide.
  • After three seasons plus 12 matches, Forsythe is averaging 6.02, a mark good for No. 3 in NCAA Division I history, and she is the NCAA's active career leader in that stat category.
  • The three-time Patriot League Libero of the Year and All-Patriot League First Team honoree has totaled 1,855 digs in her career, ranking her second all-time at Loyola and third in Patriot League history.
  • She has finished in the top four of Division I players in digs per set during all three of her collegiate seasons, ranking fourth in 2018, third in 2019 and fourth in 2020. Her averages of 5.86, 6.17 and 6.04 are the three highest in Patriot League history.
  • She was the first player in Loyola history to earn American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region honors, doing so in 2019 when she was also named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year. She was then invited to Colorado Springs for Team USA tryouts following that season.
  • Forsythe became the fastest player in Loyola and Patriot League history to reach 1,000 digs in a career, doing so in 44 matches whens he hit the plateau on September 22, 2019. She set conference and school records that year with 697 digs in a season.

Two Better Than Five

  • Loyola's two most-recent full seasons (2018 and 2019) produced 15 Patriot League victories during the regular-season and two trips to the conference championships. In the Greyhounds first five years in the League, starting in 2013, they won just 13 conference matches.
