The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer continues conference play this weekend, hosting Lafayette in the first meeting between the two sides since the 2019 Patriot League quarterfinals.

Last Time Out

  • Sarah Mirr went coast-to-coast while scoring her second goal of the season in the 15th minute, and Paige Sim matched a season high with seven saves during a 1-1 draw for Loyola at Army West Point last Saturday.
  • The Greyhounds earned the program's first-ever point at Army. Trinity Garay equalized off a corner kick for the Black Knights (4-4-3, 1-0-2 PL) in the 51st minute.
  • Mirr's effort, her second goal of the year, started well inside Loyola's defensive zone. She raced through the midfield, maneuvered around an Army defender and blasted a shot from outside the box into the left corner to put the Greyhounds in front.
  • The visitors had the top two chances to score in the extra sessions. Baylee DeSmit had a chip over the goalkeeper cleared on the goal line by Army defender Andrea Riddle in the closing seconds of the first overtime, and Kaleigh Gallagher had a shot inside the box stopped by a charging Sage Strohman in goal in the 103rd minute.

Offensive Leaders

  • With her goal at West Point, Sarah Mirr (2 G, 2 A) moved into a tie with Ada Clare Tempert (3 G) for the team lead in points, with both managing six apiece through the season's first 11 games.
  • Baylee DeSmit (2 G, 1 A) follows with five points, and she also leads the team with 27 shots (16 SOG) on the year.
  • Mirr had points in three of Loyola's first four games, picking up assists in victories over Marist (8/19) and Iona (8/29) and scoring the Greyhounds' lone goal at Princeton (9/27).
  • Of Tempert's three goals, two have been game-winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate).
  • Fourteen different Greyhounds have at least one point on the year. Kelly Hutton scored the lone goal in Loyola's season-opening 1-0 win over Marist, and Olivia Quaranta's first collegiate strike was the game-winner in a 5-1 home victory over Iona.

Series History

  • Loyola leads 5-2-3 in a series which dates back to 1998.
  • The Greyhounds won both meetings during the 2019 season. Hannah Hoefs' long-distance strike in the 108th minute secured a 1-0 victory for Loyola in the Patriot League quarters. That was the first tournament victory for the program since joining the conference in 2013.
  • Hoefs and Kaleigh Gallagher both scored early in the first half of a 2-1 home victory during the regular season that year.
  • Lafayette's last victory in the series was a 3-1 home triumph in the 2018 regular season finale for both sides.

Scouting Lafayette

  • The Leopards (2-7, 0-3 PL) have suffered three one-goal defeats since beginning Patriot League play, falling to Boston University (2-1), Lehigh (2-1) and American (4-3) in their last three contests.
  • Lafayette, which was shutout in its first three games of the season, ranks last in the Patriot League in scoring offense (1.0 goals per game) and is second-last in scoring defense (2.09 goals allowed per game).
  • Jr. F Melissa Lamanna (4 G) and Fr. D Gretchen Waechter (3 G, 2 A) lead the Leopards offensively with eight points apiece.
  • Lafayette is looking to replace a pair of 2021 graduates in Krista Kissell and Sophie Saldivar who combined for 27 points during the last full season in 2019. Kissell was named PL Offensive Player of the Year that fall, while Saldivar was a first team All-Patriot League performer during the shortened Spring 2021 campaign.
Quick Notes Entering the Weekend
  • Eight players (Gillian Borton, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim, Ada Clare Tempert) have started each of the first 11 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Searing and Jess Korman each recorded their first collegiate points on assists during a 2-1 victory over Colgate in Loyola's conference opener on Sept. 18.
  • Gray leads all field players in minutes played (930). She has played every minute on the backline in four of Loyola's last six contests.
  • The Greyhounds' lone road victory so far this season was a 2-0 triumph at Howard on Sept. 9. That win was the 100th at Loyola and 150th overall for head coach Joe Mallia.
Recipes for Success
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last 11 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 3-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also undefeated (3-0-1) when leading at halftime this fall. They are 5-0-2 overall in their last seven games when holding an advantage at the intermission.

More on Sim

  • Paige Sim is a two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week this season, and she has earned six weekly awards overall during her first two-plus seasons at Loyola (5x Goalkeeper of the Week, 1x Rookie of the Week).
  • Sim has played 1019 out of a possible 1030 minutes this season, and she has totaled 6+ saves in seven of her 11 appearances.
  • For the year, Sim is 4-5-2 with a 1.24 goals-against average, a .788 save percentage and three shutouts. Taking away Loyola's defeats to ACC leaders Clemson and Wake Forest, she is 4-3-2 with a 0.75 GAA and .851 save percentage.
  • Sim was a third team All-Patriot League honoree during the 2021 spring season, and she was a second team selection following her freshman season in 2019.
  • For her career, Sim is 13-9-8 with a 0.77 GAA, a .831 save percentage and 11 shutouts.

Worth Noting

  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 25 points (10 G, 5 A) in 51 collegiate appearances.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 12 of 16 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 6-4-6 during that stretch.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
Smart Hounds
  • Loyola finished the 2021 spring semester with an impressive 3.604 team GPA. A total of 17 Greyhounds recorded a semester GPA above 3.60, with Gillian Borton, Kaleigh Gallagher, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr and Jenna Nall all posting perfect 4.0 GPA's.
  • Sarah Bayer (biology/speech pathology interdisciplinary major, 3.95 GPA) and Paige Sim (biology major, 3.94 GPA) were both Academic All-Patriot League selections, with Bayer later becoming the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree since 2012.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola has another week off before heading to Holy Cross next Saturday, with opening kick in Worcester, Mass., set for 12 p.m.
