BALTIMORE –
Baylee DeSmit put Loyola University Maryland ahead, 2-1, in the 50
th minute, but Columbia University scored twice in the next seven minutes to regain the lead and hold on for a 3-2 non-conference win on Thursday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
DeSmit, who also assisted on the Greyhounds' first goal, used a one-time touch inside the six off a
Kelly Hutton cross from the deep left corner to find the net at 49:29, giving Loyola its first advantage of the game.
Payton Hurley started the scoring chance with a long through ball ahead to Hutton down the left sideline.
Ally Clark equalized for the Lions (1-0-1 overall) just over four minutes later. Grace Hurren held the ball in the offensive end for Columbia with a touch to Maia Tabion who directed it to Shira Cohen.
Cohen cut into the defense and threaded a ball through traffic to Clark who turned and scored right-footed to knot the score at 2-2.
Columbia broke the tie two-minutes, three-second later when Ania Prussak scored. Sophia Cavaliere sent a pass up the far sideline to Cohen, and she turned the ball inside to Prussak near the top of the 18. Prussak touched it with her right and then struck a hard shot from her left that went into the left side of the goal to provide the ultimate game-winner.
DeSmit and
Zoe Willis would have shots on goal for the Greyhounds over the next 10 minutes, but each chance was saved by Columbia's Liz Matei.
Loyola had another opportunity with just over two minutes left when Hutton sent a cross from the right to the top of the six, but a shot by
Chloe Kuminkoski slid high, and the score remained 3-2.
Columbia held a 10-5 shot advantage in the game and a 6-1 lead in corners.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Grace Hurren tallied a goal off a Prussak assist.
Loyola came back to tie the game at 1-1 with 29:00 on the clock as
Alex Searing scored her second career goal – and second in as many matches. She headed in a DeSmit free kick from nearly 45 yards out.
The Greyhounds play their third of a five-game homestand on Sunday, September 4, at 5 p.m. against Kent State University.
