Almost Home

  • Loyola University Maryland volleyball plays another weekend of road competition before finally making its 2022 home debut in a week.
  • This week, the Greyhounds stay nearby, however, for their road games as they play first in Washington, D.C., against American University on Friday, September 23, at 7 p.m. Loyola then heads to Annapolis, Maryland, for a 4 o'clock contest on Saturday afternoon.

For Starters

  • The Greyhounds began the year at the Penn State Invitational where they finished 1-2 with a three-set win over Duquesne, a five-set loss to West Virginia and a four-set loss to seven-time NCAA Champion Penn State. Lauren Link was named to the All-Tournament Team after 4.83 kills per set across the three matches.
  • Loyola then played a Tuesday night match at Coppin State, rallying from a first-set loss to beat the Eagles in three. Link had 22 kills in the match, while Megan Bukala and Caitlin Churney each knocked down 10.
  • The final non-conference tournament of the season took Loyola to Athens, Ohio, where it played in the Bobcat Invitational. The Greyhounds lost a pair of three-set contests to Bradley and Tennessee Tech and then dropped a four-set affair to host Ohio University. Link was named to the All-Tournament Team there, as well.
  • Loyola opened Patriot League action last weekend with a 914-mile trip that took the Greyhounds first to Colgate University and then to College of the Holy Cross. The Greyhounds took the first set from the Raiders before falling in four, and they then defeated the Crusaders in Worcester.

Link-ing The Kills

  • Lauren Link broke out as a sophomore outside hitter for the Greyhounds in 2021, finishing second on the team with 3.24 kills per set, a mark good for fifth-best in the Patriot League. She had 17 matches with 10 or more kills, including each of the Greyhounds' last 13 contests. During that stretch, she averaged 14.1 kills per match and 3.6 kills per set.
  • This season, Link has moved into a role as the Greyhounds' primary option on the outside, and she has the stats to back it up. In seven matches, she has put away 152 kills, an average of 4.47 per set. She posted 21 against both West Virginia and Penn State in the first tournament of the year, and she then had 22 versus Coppin State.

All Of The Records

  • Katie Forsythe became the Patriot League and Loyola all-time record holder in digs on October 23, 2021, matching her previous status atop both the conference and school lists for digs in a season and a match.
  • In that match at American, Forsythe had her 2,013th career dig early in the contest, passing the Eagles' Kristen Largay (2016-19) for tops in the conference; late in the match, she moved past Brittany Born's mark of 2,042 to set the school record. In 102 career matches, Forsythe has 2,364 digs.
  • In 2019, she set the school record, and tied the Patriot League mark with 45 digs in a match, and her 753 digs that season stand as a school and conference mark.
  • Forsythe is the NCAA Division I active career leader in digs per set with 5.8, a mark that ranks fourth all-time in NCAA history.
  • The four-time Patriot League Libero of the Year has finished in the top four of Division I players in digs per set during all three of her collegiate seasons, ranking fourth in 2018, third in 2019 and fourth in 2020. Her averages of 5.86, 6.17 and 6.04 are the three highest in Patriot League history. Last year, she ranked third in NCAA Division I with 5.71 digs per set.
  • She was the first player in Loyola history to earn American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region honors, doing so in 2019 when she was also named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, and she repeated those honors last year in 2021.. She was invited to Colorado Springs for Team USA tryouts following the 2019 season.

Sophomore Sets It Up

  • Kacy Sekunda moved into the primary setting role for the Greyhounds during the second weekend of 2021, and she handled the role with poise. She was second in the Patriot League in assists per set (9.82), and she also hit .260 with 90 kills.
  • Sekunda's assists mark ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division I amongst freshmen setters.
  • This year, she has split time as the setter with Ashley Dwyer. Sekunda leads the Greyhounds with 8.79 assists per set, while Dwyer has chipped in with 4.08. During the rotations when Dwyer is in command of the offense, Sekunda slides to the opposite side as a hitter where she has 29 kills.
