Three Win Twice As Men’s Swimming & Diving Wins At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Caleb Kelly, Joe Hayburn and Henry Mueller all won three races on Saturday as the Loyola University Maryland men's swimming and diving team remained unbeaten this season with a 193-69 victory at College of William & Mary.
 
The Greyhounds men won both relay events and scored victories in 11 of 12 individual races en route to the victory.
 
William & Mary's women dealt Loyola its first defeat of the season, 186-76.
 
Doubling Up
  • The trio of Kelly, Hayburn and Mueller combined for 58 of the Greyhounds points individual with their six combined wins, plus a second-place finish for Mueller.
  • Kelly held down first in both sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 in 20.56 seconds and the 100 with a time of 45.76.
  • Hayburn won both backstroke events with narrow wins against a pair of teammates. First, he held off his own brother, Patrick Hayburn, for first in the 100 backstroke, swimming 49.71 to Patrick's 50.08. Joe Hayburn then won the 200 backstroke in 1:49.00 with Max Verheyen taking second in 1:52.11.
  • Mueller put the first individual win on the board Saturday with a victory in the 200 freestyle, clocking 1:41.38 as Tyler Knurek (1:42.88) and Verheyen (1:43.02) completed a one-two-three sweep for the Greyhounds. Mueller then came back to win the 500 freestyle in 4:40.22, just a second faster than teammate Jonah Goodman's 4:41.28.
Winning Woman
  • Lauren Lane topped the 200 backstroke field by more than two seconds, coming from behind to take first in 2:03.05. Lane went in to the final 100 yards behind the Tribe's Kat Vanbourgondien, btu Lane had the fastest times over the last four laps to pick up the victory.
Top Twos
  • In addition to going first-second-third in the 200 freestyle, Loyola's men were first and second in seven races on Saturday.
  • Michael Gozdan and Zach Eisenmann accomplished the feat in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with each winning one. Gozdan got the better of the 100 in 55.68 to Eisenmann's 56.59, Eisenmann returned the favor in the 200, getting to the wall in 2:05.65, edging Gozdan by nine-hundredths of a second.
  • Cameron Shinnick earned the top spot in the 200 butterfly by swimming 1:52.59 to out-touch Owen Glaser's time of 1:52.76.
  • Verheyen swam 1:53.57 to win the final event, the 200 individual medley with Mueller coming in second in 1:54.01.
Fly-ing To First
  • Patrick Hayburn was a winner for the Greyhounds in the 100 butterfly, going 50.29 to beat William & Mary's Kent Codding (50.81).
Relay Success
  • Joe Hayburn, Verheyen, Patrick Hayburn and Kelly led off the meet for the men with a time of 1:30.30 to win the 200 medley relay.
  • And, the meet closed for Loyola with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay as Joe Hayburn, Kelly, Patrick Hayburn and Mueller swam 1:22.26 for a win by almost two seconds.
  • Loyola's women took second in both relays with Lily Mead, Avery Stimmel, Michaela Schultz and Charley Tulio opening with a time of 1:44.31, just four-hundredths of a second behind William & Mary's winning effort.
  • Stimmel, Haley Robinson, Schultz and Tulio finished second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.63.
Solid Seconds
  • Loyola's women had four second-place finishes in the meet against the Tribe.
  • Riley ZIngler finished the 1,000 freestyle in 10:28.79, and Tulio was second in the 50 freestyle in 24.01.
  • Loyola was second and third in the 100 backstroke – Mead (57.91) and Kelly Bruen (58.73) – and the 100 breaststroke – Stimmel (1:06.05) and Paige Simko (1:06.71).
