Tennis Teams Earn First Dual Match Wins Of Year, Sweeping Hampton

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis recorded their first dual match wins on Saturday night, sweeping matches from Hampton University as the teams played indoors at the Bare Hills Coppermine Racquet & Fitness Club.

The Greyhounds women were 6-1 winners, while the men edged the Pirates, 4-3.

Loyola's women picked up two doubles wins for the early point as Jessica Bodewes and Olivia Tracey dispatched Angelina Blinova and Sofia Sokolova, 6-2, at No. 1. Madison Metzdorf and Christine Richiez were then victors at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 decision over Lucia Jorrin Fernandez and Laura Peralta. Hampton won the No. 2 doubles match with Mio Kozaki and Diana Starodubtseva beating Jocelyn Assael and Lauren Manwiller, 7-5.

Tracey and Manwiller picked up wins at No. 1 and 2 singles as the former beat Blinova, 6-2, 6-3, and the latter was a 6-1, 6-2 winnver against Sokolova. Starodubtseva got past Bodewes at No. 3 singles to pick up the Pirates lone point, 6-3, 6-4.  Richiez was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 4 singles, while Assael beat Fernandez, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5. Metzdorf scored a No. 6 singles win, 6-0, 6-4, against Franzene Tsui.

The Loyola men split the doubles and earned the point by a defult from Hampton at No. 3. Oliver Davey and Harry Zeiders were 6-0 winners at No. 2 doubles against Donte Armbrister and Emiliano Jorquera. The Pirates won No. 1 doubles, 6-3, as Erden Er and Danny Flynn eases past Matt Cardano and George Cavo.

Cardano rallied for a No. 1 singles win, 6-1, 7-5, (10-8) over Flynn, but Armbrister came back to beat Cavo, but 7-5, 7-6 at No. 2. 

Davey picked up a Loyola point at No. 3 singles, beating Jorquera 4-6, 6-4, (10-5). Hampton won the No. 4 and 5 singles as Ange-Kevin Koua beat Zeiders, 6-3, 6-3,and Er was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 5 against Boland. Dylan Koziol picked up the final point, winning by defualt for Loyola, at No. 6.
