SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Five Loyola University Maryland players are in the top 20 individually after two rounds at the Ross College Classic, and the Greyhounds have a 10-shot lead going into Tuesday's final round at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club.
Mike Crowley,
Carlo Pizzano and
James Rico all shot 4-under 68 in the second round after
Matt Malits opened the day with a team-leading 5-under 67 in the first.
Pizzano is tied for third overall at 6-under, while Crowley is seventh two shots back. Malits and Rico are amongst players tied for 14
th at 2-under, and
Gustavo Rangel had rounds of 73-70 to tie for 18
th after the first day at 1-under.
Malits led the way in the first round as the Greyhounds were tied with South Florida following the opening 18 at 6-under 282. Malits rolled in three birdies over the last four holes to get to 5-under, his best round as a collegiate player.
Pizzano shot 2-under, and Crowley was at even-par 72 after the first round.
The Greyhounds started the second with a slew of red numbers on the scoreboard on the par-72 course's front nine. Led by six from Crowley and five by Pizzano, Loyola had 17 birdies on the front nine of the course, a total of 45 combined holes.
Crowley dipped to 7-under with a birdie on 10, his fourth in a row to match a streak put together by Pizzano on holes four through seven. Pizzano also birdied the ninth and had two more on the 14
th and 15
th to give him seven for the round.
Rico had two birdies on both the front and back nine and otherwise had a bogey-free second round with 14 pars.
Rangel had a bogey four on the 13
th hole, but he rebounded two holes later with an eagle on the 542-yard, par-5 15
th hole.
Loyola finished at 14-under 274 in the second round, a score tied for the sixth-best in school single-round history.
Overall, the Greyhounds are 20-under through 36 holes at 556, tied for the fourth-best 36-hole total in school history.
South Florida is 10 shots back at 10-under, and Elon is one back at 9-under. Those two teams, along with the Greyhounds, were the only ones of 18 to finish Monday under par.
Play will conclude at the event on Tuesday with 18 holes.
