Volleyball Rebounds With Four-Set Win Over Stony Brook

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team rebounded from a three-set setback on Tuesday night with a victory over Stony Brook University to open the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic on Friday morning.
 
The Greyhounds (4-4 overall) took the opening set before the Seawolves (3-5) came back to win the second, 27-25. The Greyhounds held Stony Brook to only 11 kills in the third and fourth sets combined to win the final two, 25-19, 25-16.
Set Breakdown
  • Set One
    • Stony Brook took its first lead at 17-16 after the third of three-straight kills by Kali Moore, but the Seawolves would not go up by more than one in the set.
    • Abby Stanwood gave them a 22-21 lead, but Lauren Link had a sideout kill for Loyola, and Kennedy Stevens served an ace to make it 23-22 Greyhounds.
    • Stony Brook evened the set at 23-23 after a Loyola attack error, but Churney and Morgan Crawford combined for a block to give Loyola set point, and Churney then put away and overpass for a kill to close the set for the Greyhounds.
  • Set Two
    • The Seawolves built a 15-11 lead midway through the second set only to see the Greyhounds rally to tie the score at 19-19.
    • Crawford and Churney again teamed for a block to tie the score at 24-24, but Stanwood had a kill for Stony Brook. Riley Hamilton fought off the set point with a Greyhounds kill for sideout at 25-25, but Stony Brook scored the next two and tied the match at 1-1.
  • Set Three
    • Stony Brook managed just three kills to the Greyhounds' 16 in the set as Loyola hit .214 and pulled to within a set of winning the contest.
  • Set Four
    • Loyola continued to generate good offense, hitting .244 with 14 kills in the fourth as Stony Brook connected for just eight total kills.
    • Loyola led 9-3 after 12 points, and the set was never closer than four points thereafter.

  • Hamilton had career-highs of 16 kills and a .484 hitting percentage for the Greyhounds while also contributing nine digs.
  • Three others had eight or more kills for Loyola: Link (11), Stevens (10) and Churney (8).
  • Churney and Crawford both had three blocks, while Stevens finished with two.
  • Bryanne Soares had season-best 30 assists in the match and also served four aces.
  • She led all players with 20 digs, while Rose McDermott added 15.
