ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Gustavo Rangel shot a two-round total of 1-under 143 on Saturday and is tied for fifth individually, while the Loyola University Maryland golf team finished the day third as a team, at the 2024 playing of The Goat.
Rangel had a stretch of five birdies in six holes on the back nine of the Naval Academy Golf Club – including four in a row on the 14
th through 17
th holes – to shoot a 3-under 68 in the morning's first round.
He then put together a round of 2-over 73 in the afternoon and is three shots off the individual lead of 4-under from Pacific's Deitrek Gill.
The Greyhounds shot 7-over 291 in the first round and cut that total by five strokes for 2-over 286 in the afternoon. They are 9-over after 36 holes behind leader Pacific (-9) and second-place Columbia (-6). Loyola is four shots in front of Maryland, five up on William & Mary.
Rangel's 68 was matched by teammate
Jackson Roman in the second round to move him into a tie for 13
th place at 1-over 145 overall.
Roman birdied the second hole and then hit a pin-high iron to within 12 feet on the par-5 third hole, rolling in an eagle putt. He carded another birdie on the third hole and then mixed in three more on the course's back nine.
Eli Spaulding bounced back from a 4-over 75 in the first round to shoot an even-par 71 in the afternoon, and he is tied for 23
rd at 4-over.
Mike Crowley was 2-over 73 in the morning and then shot 3-over 74 in the second round to tie for 27
th through 36 holes at 5-over.
Lorenzo Sanz is 80
th after rounds of 80-79 on Saturday.
Loyola will play in the final threesomes with competitors from Pacific and Columbia starting from the first hole at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday.
