BEHTLEHEM, Pa. – Three days after picking up his first collegiate victory, Loyola University Maryland's
Gustavo Rangel was named the Patriot League Men's Golfer of the Week by the conference office.
Rangel shot a 2-under 69 and had a bogey-free back-nine on Sunday at the Naval Academy Golf Club to post a win at The Goat amongst a field that had 15 teams and 84 total players.
He led the Greyhounds to a second-place finish for the second tournament in as many outings this fall. Loyola shot Sunday's low round of 1-under 283 to take second by 12 shots.
Rangel entered the day in a tie for fifth place after rounds of 68 and 73 Saturday on the 7,025-yard, par-71 course.
He birdied the par-5 fourth hole but gave the shot back with a bogey on the fifth at the beginning of his final round Sunday. He came back to birdie the par-4 sixth hole, but again the score went back the wrong direction with a bogey on the par-3 seventh.
Rangel turned to the back nine at even par for the day and 1-under for the tournament, and he parred the 10
th and 11
th holes before circling a three on the par-4 12
th hole to drop to 2-under overall. That birdie moved him into a share of the lead for the first time.
He stayed in that spot with two more pars on the 13
th and 14
th holes before a birdie on the par-4 15
th hole gave him sole possession of first.
Rangel carded pars on the next two holes and then drained a putt just over three feet for par on the 18
th green to take a one-shot victory over Navy's Jack Tarzy who had moved into contention with a 5-under 31 on the back nine.
The Patriot League award is the second of Rangel's career. He was named Player of the Week on April 12, 2023, after leading the Greyhounds at the University of Virginia's Lewis Chitengwa Memorial.
The honor is also the second of the year for the Greyhounds.
Eli Spaulding earned the recognition after his tie for second-place at the Howard/USF Intercollegiate led Loyola to a second-place finish as a team.
