WEST POINT, N.Y. — Loyola Maryland battled on the road Thursday night but fell 2-0 to Army West Point in a hard-fought Patriot League matchup at Malek Stadium.
The Greyhounds (5-4-7, 2-2-4 Patriot League) battled with Army on Friday night, but fell to the Black Knights. Goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer anchored the back line with three saves, including a pair of crucial stops in the first half to keep Loyola within striking distance.
Francesca Khachatourians nearly gave Loyola an early lead with a shot on target in the fifth minute, forcing Army keeper Karalyn Dail into action. Taryn Buckley added another attempt in the 34th minute, but the Greyhounds couldn't find the back of the net.
Loyola's midfield, led by Brigid McElderry and Asma Merzougui, disrupted Army's rhythm and drew fouls throughout the match. The Greyhounds earned three corner kicks in the second half and held Army to just five shots on goal despite 14 total attempts.
Army (11-4-2, 5-2-1) broke through in the 31st minute with a goal from Brigid Duffy, assisted by Bella Conti. Conti later set up Sophia Henry for the Black Knights' second tally in the 57th minute.
The Greyhounds held Army scoreless over the final 33 minutes and controlled possession for stretches, but couldn't convert late chances.
Loyola closes out the regular season next Wednesday, as they will host Navy to close out Patriot League play.
