Three Join Loyola Golf In Class of 2030

BALTIMORE – Three accomplished junior golfers have signed to compete for the Loyola University Maryland golf team and will comprise the Greyhounds' Class of 2030.

"I am excited to welcome Matthew, Michael and Zach as our newest members of Loyola Golf," said Head Coach Chris Baloga. "Each of these guys have had great success at the junior golf and amateur level and I cannot wait to have them on campus this fall.  As a class, these are the highest ranked players we have signed and I think that is a credit to the schedule that we play and our practice facilities for these guys to improve while at Loyola."

Michael Asselta (Ramsey, New Jersey), Zach Berger (Remsenburg, New York) and Matthew Simpson (Toronto, Ontario) are ranked 237th, 217th and 224th on Junior Golf Scoreboard through this fall.

Asselta arrives from Saint Joseph Regional High School, where he established himself as one of North Jersey's top players. He was a two-time first-team all-state honoree and earned first-team all-county and all-North Jersey recognition three times. In 2024, he was named North Jersey Player of the Year and was selected as a Bergen Record Athlete of the Week. Asselta also helped lead Saint Joseph Regional to the 2025 New Jersey state title, along with sectional, county and league championships over the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Asselta brings a strong junior golf résumé highlighted by his 2024 New Jersey Junior Championship victory, multiple AJGA top-10 finishes and a win at the 2024 NJPGA Fall Invitational. He excelled academically as a member of the National Honor Society and Italian Honor Society, consistently earning Principal's List and Honor Roll recognition. Off the course, he participated in multiple Sleep Out and Midnight Run service projects and traveled to Los Angeles in November to volunteer on Skid Row.

Berger joins the Greyhounds after a decorated career at Westhampton Beach High School, where he was a three-time individual conference champion and two-time individual section champion. He twice placed in the top 10 at the New York State Championship and finished as runner-up at the NYS Federation Championship. The reigning Long Island Golfer of the Year and three-time All-Long Island honoree, Berger also led Westhampton Beach to two conference titles and four Sebonack High School Challenge team championships, while helping the squad reach three sectional semifinals and one sectional final.

Berger's junior golf résumé includes a victory at the 56th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship and five top-12 finishes on the AJGA circuit. A standout multisport athlete, he also played varsity tennis as a freshman, earning All-League and All-County recognition. Berger excelled academically as a member of the National Honor Society and the World Language Honor Society, appearing on the honor roll throughout high school. He also volunteered at the LT. Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum and interned with the Southampton Press, assisting with writing, headlines and editing.

Simpson comes to Loyola St. Michael's College School as a 2024 OFSAA bronze medalist. He helped guide St. Michael's to back-to-back OFSAA team championships in 2024 and 2025. His strong junior career features qualification for the 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur and selection to Team Ontario for the 2026 season.
