GOODYEAR, Ariz. –
Eli Spaulding and
Mike Crowley shot 2- and 1-under par, respectively, on Sunday, leading the Loyola University Maryland golf team during the first day of the 13
th edition of the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club.
The pair combined for six birdies and 28 pars on the 7,015-yard, par-72 course as the Greyhounds finished the opening 18 holes tied for fifth out of 19 teams at 2-under par.
Spaulding had just one blemish on his Sunday card, a double-bogey – on his second hole of the day, the par-3 eighth hole – but he got back to level three holes later after birdies at the ninth and 11
th holes.
He continued his day with birdies on the 14
th and second holes along with 11 more pars to shoot 2-under 70, good for tied for 14
th individually.
Crowley started with seven-straight pars during the round before birding the 525-yard, par-4 14
th hole. He dipped to 2-under during the first round with a birdie on the 18
th hole, but he came back to 1-under where he finished after a bogey on the second.
The graduate student is tied for 21
st after 18 holes.
Dustin Stocksdale played his last 10 holes at 1-under par with a birdie on the second hole and nine other pars to finish at even-par and tied for 30
th as an individual.
Jackson Roman and
Gustavo Rangel both shot 1-over 73 on Sunday and are tied for 45
th to round out the Greyhounds' scoring.
Lorenzo Sanz shot 2-over 74 and is tied for 66
th while playing as an individual.
Richmond leads the team standings by three strokes after shooting 11-under 277 as a team. The Spiders are followed by Middle Tennessee, Tennessee-Martin, Marshall and Boise State. Marshall's Ryan Bilby leads the individual race after a 9-under 63.
The second round will commence with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. (MST); Loyola will play with competitors from Toledo, Richmond and North Dakota State.
