DORADO, Puerto Rico –
Mike Crowley,
Gustavo Rangel,
Jackson Roman and
Dustin Stocksdale each shot 2-under 70 on Sunday, and the Loyola University Maryland golf team finished Sunday's first round tied for fifth place at the Dorado Beach Collegiate.
The Greyhounds are 8-under through 18 holes as a team, tied with Wofford for fifth, two shots back of Illinois State and Connecticut in third.
Stocksdale got on a heater from the start of his round, birding his first four holes before bogeys on four of his next six holes had him level through 10. He came back with birdies on the TPC Dorado Beach Sugarcane Course's third and sixth holes, and he withstood a bogey on the seventh before birding his penultimate hole – the ninth – to finish at 2-under.
Crowley also got to red numbers quickly after his shotgun start began on the course's ninth hole. He birdied that and then had birdies on the 12
th and 14
th holes before two bogeys set him back to 1-under. He finished with two birdies and a bogey on his final 10 holes.
Playing on his home island, Ragnel recorded a par and a birdie on his first two holes before stringing together six-straight pars to sit 1-under after eight holes. He played the next 10 holes at 1-under and joined the group at 2-under.
Roman had the least volatile card of the day for the Greyhounds, putting together 14 pars to go with three birdies and just one bogey.
The four Greyhounds are tied for 21
st headed into Monday's second round.
Eli Spaulding is tied for 37
th after an even-par 72 on Sunday to round out Loyola's five scorers.
Matt Carpentier made his collegiate tournament debut as an individual for Loyola and shot 1-over 73, good for 53
rd in the 102-player field.
