Quick Hits

  • The Loyola University Maryland men's basketball wraps up a two-game homestand on Saturday, January 17, with a home game at Reitz Arena against Boston University.
  • Tip-off against the Terriers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Saturday's game, and all non-televised Patriot League contests, will stream live on ESPN+.
  • The contest is the second of three in six days for the Greyhounds.
  • Josh Loeffler is in his second year as the Greyhounds' head coach after taking the position as Loyola's 22nd all-time head coach in March 2024. Last year, he led the Greyhounds to a five-win improvement over the 2023-24 season.
  • Loyola returns nine players to its roster from a year ago and features three seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen.

Series History

  • Loyola and Boston University will meet for the 29th time in series history, and the 26th time since both teams joined the Patriot League for the 2013-14 season. The Terriers hold a 20-8 lead in the previous games after winning last seven of the last eight meetings. The teams won on their own home courts last year and split the regular-season series.
  • Loyola snapped a six-game series winning streak by the Terriers on February 1 in Baltimore with a 69-67 victory. Jacob Theodosiou and Tyson Commander made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions with less than four minutes to play in regulation in the game, and Commander spearheaded a defensive stop on the Terriers' last possession to seal the game.
  • In the year's second meeting in Boston, the Greyhounds took a 66-63 lead with 99 seconds left in regulation, but the Terriers scored on a traditional 3-point play with 1:12 to go, and Kyrone Alexander had the winning shot on a pull-up with 25 seconds left.
  • The last five games between the two schools, dating to February 4, 2023, have been settled by a combined 10 points.

Watch The Action

  • Saturday's game will stream live on ESPN+.
  • All Loyola home games this season will also stream live on ESPN+ and be available internationally on Sidearm.

Last Time Out

  • Colgate led by nine with less than five minutes to play, but Loyola got the margin to one with 68 seconds left only to see the Raiders hold on for an 86-80 Patriot League win Wednesday in Reitz Arena.
  • Braeden Speed grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a 3-pointer with 2:55 left, pulling the Greyhounds within two, 73-71, but Ben Tweedy responded with a three for Colgate 23 ticks later.
  • Speed knocked down another three at 2:08, and Loyola was back within a pair before Andrew Alekseyenko converted in the paint at 1:46, stretching the Raiders' advantage back to four.
  • Sebastien Emenalo was the Greyhounds player this time to collect an offensive board and score, making it 78-76 Colgate with 1:33 to play, and the Greyhounds got a defensive stop on the next Raiders possession.
  • Speed was fouled going to the rim at 1:08, making the first of two and bringing the margin to one, 78-77.
  • Both teams would have possessions without scoring over the next 40 seconds, but Alekseyenko made one of two at the line with 27 ticks on the clock, and Colgate led 80-77.
  • The lead extended to three five with 18 seconds left after a Loyola 3-point attempt went off and Colgate was awarded possession on a jump ball, forcing the Greyhounds to foul Tweedy.
  • After Tweedy made two foul shots, Speed canned another 3-pointer, bringing the margin to 82-80, but Colgate made four free throws in the final 10 seconds to secure the win.
  • Speed had his first collegiate double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He scored all of his 20 after halftime. Emenalo made 7 of 8 shots, 3 of 3 from 3-point range, and finished with a career-best 19 points while grabbing five boards. Emmett Adair added 13 points, and Jordan Stiemke had 12 for Loyola.

Back To Speed

  • Braeden Speed is second on the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game, a mark that is up a full two points since the start of December over Loyola's last nine games. He has led the Greyhounds in scoring in five of the last six games, including four of five conference outings.
  • The sophomore guard from Arizona had a stretch of five-straight games with 11 points or more (Nov. 6-19) snapped when he finished with five at then-No. 12 Kentucky, a game that started a three-game stretch where he totaled just 20 (six in limited action versus Washington College and nine against Coppin State).
  • Since then, Speed has scored 14 at Hampton and his second-best total of the year, 17 at VMI, 10 against Mount St. Mary's a career-best 24 points at George Mason and team highs of 13 at American, 18 against Lafayette and 19 at Army West Point.
  • He had his first collegiate double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Colgate.
  • The game against the Raiders was the third 20-plus point game of Speed's collegiate career, joining his November 15 game against Stonehill when he had 21 and the December 21 contest at George Mason.
  • During the last nine outings, Speed has shot 44.2 percent from the field (42 of 95), making 41.9 percent (18 of 43) from 3-point range. Overall this year, he is also first on the team in total rebounds (83) and second in assists (60 total, 3.3 per game).

Speed In The League

  • Braeden Speed is tied for ninth in the Patriot League in points per game during conference play, averaging 16.2 over five games. Getting to the line has been a big part of helping those scoring numbers. He leads the conference in free throws made (32) and attempted (37) during conference games.

Second Half Sparks

  • Through 18 games this year, the Greyhounds' offense has been better during the second half of games, averaging 40.7 points to 33.6 in the first half.
  • Loyola has shot .462 from the field after the break, compared with .410 in the first.

Adair Up There

  • Emmett Adair had the best game of his young career against Coppin State making 11 of 17 shots from the field, 3 of 6 from 3-point range, en route to scoring 29 points. He was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after that game and a 10-point, 7-rebound performance against Washington College.
  • Adair had the second 20-plus point game of the season on December 9 at VMI, making 10 of 18 from the field to finish with 21 points.
  • Adair missed the first five games of Loyola's season with an illness, but he's been a key contributor since making his debut November 19 at Duquesne. The Sydney, Australia, native has averaged 11.5 points, a team-high 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in his 13 games played while averaging just 23.1 minutes.
  • Adair, who played for the Australian Senior National Team this summer as it went 6-0 to qualify for in FIBA Asia Cup qualifying, has shot 46.2 percent from the field in those games, 61.5 percent from 2-point range.

Sirtautas' Return

  • Jonas Sirtautas missed 3-1/2 games with an arm injury suffered in the first half of the December 3 game at Hampton before returning to action on December 31 at American.
  • In 15 games played this season, Sirtautas is third in the Patriot League in total blocked shots (27) and tied for second in blocks per game (1.8), and he leads the conference in two-point field goal percentage (77.1).

On The Offensive Glass

  • Loyola is second in the Patriot League in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 11.6 through 18 outings.
  • Emmett Adair has played in just 13 games thus far, but he is tied for fifth in the conference with 35 pulls off the offensive glass. In those 13 games, Loyola is averaging 12.3 offensive rebounds after averaging 9.8 in the year's first five.

Theodosiou's Last Fifteen

  • Jacob Theodosiou put together the best pair of games, statistically, in a three-game stretch against Stonehill, Fairfield and Duquesne, averaging 23.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.3 steals, but his numbers have also been robust over the last 14. He has scored 20 or more six times during a run in which he is averaging a team-best 16.5 points per game.
  • The junior guard scored 21 on November 15 against Stonehill before posting 27 the next day versus host Fairfield. He was named Patriot League Player of the Week following those games before scoring 21 against Duquesne on November 19.
  • The three games represent the first time in his career that he's scored 20 or more in three-straight games and the first time a Loyola player has done so since Deon Perry did in January 2024.
  • Over Loyola's last 15 games, Theodosiou has averaged 15.8 points, 3.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals.

Emenalo Effective

  • Sebastien Emenalo has bumped up his output in the Greyhounds five conference games with the best game to-date of his young career coming January 14 against Colgate. He scored 19, making 7 of 8 from the field and all three of his 3-pointers, against the Raiders.
  • Emenalo, who played alongside Emmett Adair at the NBA Global Academy in Australia, is averaging 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds in only 13.1 minutes over five conference games. Throughout the season, in 17 appearances, Emenalo is averaging 4.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 11.9 minutes per game.
  • In the League games, he has shot 56.5 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from 3-point range, while he has shot 47.2 and 37.5 percents overall this year.

Presence Felt

  • Carter Berg-McLean's role has increased since the start of League play with the guard from New Zealand averaging 13.6 minutes in five conference games after seeing 6.9 minutes in 11 non-conference appearances.
  • Berg-McLean's presence has not solely been reflected in the box score, but can be seen in the Greyhounds' plus-minus when he has been on the floor. He was a plus-15 against Colgate (Loyola scored 15 more points than the Raiders during his 15 minutes of action). He also has 10 assists in conference games with four coming against Colgate, three at American.

Shots Were Falling

  • Loyola has made 69 of 121 shots over a two-game stretch, a pair of wins against Washington College and Coppin State, good for a .570 mark from the field.
  • The Greyhounds shot .576 (38 of 66) against the Shoremen before going 31 of 55 Sunday night against Coppin State. It is the first time Loyola has made 55 percent or better of its shots in back-to-back games since December 5-8, 2018, when it shot .579 in a loss at Drexel and .552 in a win at Binghamton.
  • The hot shooting came to an end in the first-half at Hampton, however, when Loyola made just 8 of 25 (.320). The Greyhounds did come back to shoot .469 in the second half against the Pirates. Loyola then shot .439 at VMI, .467 in the second half.

Field Goals In Bulk

  • Jacob Theodosiou (10) and Braeden Speed (9) combined for 19 made field goals against Stonehill, marking the first time since the 2017-18 season that two Loyola players had nine or more in a game. The last time it occurred was on January 24, 2018, in a 91-88 win over Lehigh when Andre Walker scored 32 on 11 of 30 shooting, and Cam Gregory added 24 while making 9 of 15.
  • Speed and Theodosiou went 9 of 14 and 10 of 18, respectively, and shot a combined .594 against the Skyhawks.

Theodosiou's Thievery

  • Jacob Theodosiou had a career-high five steals on November 15 against Stonehill, four which came in the second half and three on back-to-back-to-back possessions that led to his fast-break layups.
  • He led the Patriot League in steals per game a year ago, averaging 1.7 with 54 total steals. This year, he has a Patriot League-best 36 swipes in 18 games and is second in the conference at 2.0 per game.

At The Next Level

  • As a school of less than 4,000 undergraduate students, Loyola University Maryland boasted three former student-athletes on NBA rosters as players last month on opening night. Two members of the men's basketball incoming class of 2019, Santi Aldama (SAHN-tee ALL-dah-muh) and Cam Spencer are on the Memphis Grizzlies' roster, and four-time men's lacrosse All-American Pat Spencer is a member of the Golden State Warriors.
  • Aldama was a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after leading the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding in 2020-21, and Cam Spencer led the conference in scoring the following season. He has played in 272 NBA games through January 8 and is averaging 14.1 points and 6.7 rebounds in 40 outings this season after signing a four-year contract during the summer. He has starred for his native Spain, earning TISSOT Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament before averaging 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games during the Olympics.
  • Cam Spencer, who was a three-year starter for the Greyhounds from 2019-22, and won an NCAA Championship at Connecticut in 2023-24, made his NBA debut on November 20, 2024 for the Grizzlies and is averaging 11.9 points in 39 games this season.
  • Pat Spencer holds the Loyola men's lacrosse records for career assists and points and was the 2019 NCAA Division I Player of the Year for the Greyhounds. He switched to basketball after graduating from Loyola and has seen action in 69 games over the last three years for Golden State. This year, he's averaging 5.7 points and 3.0 assists in 27 outings.
