ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Loyola University Maryland men's 200 medley relay set a school record and finished second on the opening night of the 2026 Patriot League Championships.
Joe Hayburn led off the relay with a school-record time of 20.78 seconds in the 50 backstroke, and teammates
Brennan Coyle (23.24),
Hans van Lierop (20.67) and
Derek Feldman (19.00) went 1:23.69 to edge Army West Point by 11-hundredths of a second and take five-hundredths of a second off the previous school best set at last year's Patriot League meet.
The Greyhounds' women's 200 medley relay also had an impressive finish, taking third in their event.
Maeve Brandenburg,
Bryce Gold,
Christine Datovech and
Haley Robinson swam 1:40.17 in the race to finish behind the Black Knights and Navy.
Sam Hersick and
Thomas McCarthy scored the first individual points for the Loyola men, finishing 11th and 15th in the 3-meter event. Hersick scored 268.30 points, and McCarthy had 259.70.
Loyola's men's 800 freestyle relay –
Luke Dwyer,
Liam Schindler, Gavin Ablendale and
Colin Davis – swam 6:36.34 for sixth, and the women's side of the relay –
Michela Schultz,
Riley Fried,
Lauren Lane and Cecelia van Lierop – took seventh in 7:26.18.
The Championships continue Thursday and run through Saturday evening.
