BALTIMORE – The Loyola University Maryland men's tennis team opened play at the McClure Invitational with a 4-3 victory over Morgan State on Friday at the McClure Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds built an early advantage by sweeping doubles play. At No. 1, Petter Hagen and Ryan Gill edged Ilya Maltsev and Abduraheeml Isa, 7-6 (5). Louis Moldenhauer and David Suarez followed with a 6-4 win over Yessine Kerouat and Mohamed Ridha Ghettas at No. 2, while Cyrus Shivkumar and Eddie Roake completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Jacob Poole and Antonio Santos at No. 3.
Morgan State rallied in singles competition with victories at three positions. Maltsev defeated Hagen, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1, while Ridha Ghettas earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Suarez at No. 3. Isa added a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Roake at No. 4.
Loyola secured the team victory with singles wins from the middle and bottom of the lineup. Moldenhauer posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Kerouat at No. 2, Blake Edwards defeated Santos, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5, and Khai Rees earned a 6-1, 6-4 win against Poole at No. 6.
The Greyhounds' doubles sweep proved to be the difference as Loyola claimed the 4-3 victory to begin the McClure Invitational.
