PITTSBURGH –
Jarred Jones tallied his eighth career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and
Andre Walker matched his point total to tie for game-high honors, but Duquesne University held off Loyola University Maryland for a 65-60 non-conference victory to open the 2016-2017 season at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
The Greyhounds trailed, 36-32, at halftime, but they opened the second period on an 8-2 run to lead 40-38 on an
Andrew Kostecka 3-pointer with 17:12 to go in regulation, but Duquesne scored the next six points to reclaim the lead.
Kostecka scored five in a row for Loyola during the run, capped by the three; he finished his collegiate debut with seven points to go with two steals and two blocked shots.
Duquesne led by four, 44-40, on an Isiaha Mike basket in the pain at 15:31, but a Walker basket at 14:35 and two
James Fives free throws 50 seconds later tied the game at 44-44.
Loyola took leads of 46-44 on a Walker basket and 48-46 when Jones scored at 10:48, but each time Duquesne responded with a basket to tie. After Jones' jumper at 10:48, Spencer Littleson hit a three for the Dukes that put them in front for good.
While Duquesne maintained a lead for the rest of the game, the largest it would not grow larger than six.
A Tarin Smith free throw at 1:29 put the Dukes in front by six, 63-57, but Walker knocked down his third 3-pointer of the game with 67 ticks remaining. That cut the deficit to one possession, and
Cam Gregory blocked a Duquesne shot attempt on the Dukes' next possession.
The ball, however, went out of bounds and stayed with Duquesne with 25 seconds remaining, and after a Dukes' timeout, Eric James was fouled and hit two free throws to seal the win.
Smith was the only Dukes' player to score in double-figures, finishing with 13. Emile Blackman led the Dukes with 10 rebounds.
Gregory tallied seven rebounds and a career-high five assists for the Greyhounds, and
Chancellor Barnard blocked a career-best five shots.
Loyola returned to Baltimore for its home-opener on Monday, Nov. 14, a 7:30 p.m. game in Reitz Arena against Millersville University.
