Bench Play Sparks Men's Basketball In Home-Opening Win

Final Stats
BALTIMORE – Off to a slow start and in early foul trouble, Loyola University Maryland men's basketball turned to its bench on Monday night in its home opener, and the group responded with 41 points during the Greyhounds' 79-66 victory over Millersville University in Reitz Arena.
James Fives hit 3-pointers on back-to-back Loyola possessions to turn a five-point Marauders lead into a 9-8 Loyola advantage just over seven minutes in, giving the Greyhounds a spark offensive.
Fives finished with a career-high 13 points, while KaVaughn led Loyola with 14 points and paced all players with nine rebounds.
Andrew Kostecka added 11 points, and Chancellor Barnard tallied 10 for Loyola.
The Greyhounds (1-1 overall) had five turnovers, two missed 3-pointers and just one basket on their opening eight possessions as Millersville led by as many as six in the first five-plus minutes of action.
Scott grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled at 14:15, and he made 1-of-2 at the line before Fives drained threes on consecutive trips down the court to put Loyola in front for good.
Preseason All-Patriot League player Andre Walker was relegated to spectator status after the first 2:39 when he drew his second foul of the game, but Matt Staubi entered the game before Fives' first three, taking over point guard duties as Loyola outscored the Marauders by 18 for the next 14 minutes.
Nick Gorski later entered the game in the post, spelling Scott, and he scored six-straight Greyhounds points with the last of four free throws putting Loyola up 30-22 with 2:50 left in the first half. Jarred Jones had a jumper at 1:45 and two free throws 25 seconds later after a steal to push the home team up by 13.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Barnard scored in the paint off a Walker dish pushed the Loyola lead to 21, and it stayed above the 20-point mark for the majority of the second half.
Marcus Adkison led all players with 18 for Millersville, while Conrad Chambers scored 15 and had five assists.
Despite playing just 13 minutes in the game, Walker tied Jones for team-high honors with four assists; Jones added nine points and six rebounds.
The game was the start of a busy week for the Greyhounds who will play three games in five days. Wednesday night, Loyola will play LIU Brooklyn in Barclays Center, and the Greyhounds then travel to South Bend, Indiana, for a Friday night contest at the University of Notre Dame.
