BALTIMORE – The U.S. Naval Academy jumped out to a nine-point lead in the game's first eight minutes, and the Midshipmen held off every Loyola University Maryland run Wednesday night for a 75-62 Patriot League victory in Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds (8-8 overall, 2-3 Patriot League) twice closed the gap to three points in the first half, but Navy would not allow them to draw closer. A
Chuck Champion pull-up jumper with 10:39 to play in the stanza made it 17-14 Navy, but Nourse Fox hit a three for the Midshipmen 26 seconds later. Navy would go on lead by eight at halftime, 36-28.
After the Midshipmen (7-10, 2-3) scored the second half's first four points, Loyola got within seven, 43-36, on an
Andrew Kostecka three, but George Kiernan responded in kind with one of his three from behind the arc for Navy.
A traditional 3-point play by
James Fives pulled Loyola back within seven, 48-41, with 12:45 to go in regulation, but after Shawn Anderson and
Andre Walker traded free throws, Kiernan knocked down another three, and the Navy lead was back to 11.
The advantage grew to 13 with two more Anderson shots from the charity stripe, but Loyola reeled off the next six points, the final four coming on transition layups by
Jarred Jones and Champion. The latter's made it 56-49 Navy at 8:54. The Midshipmen did not make a field goal until a Tom Lacey bucket at 6:03, but by the Navy was back up by 11.
Anderson led the Midshipmen with 15 points, while Bryce Dulin had 14 and Kiernan tallied 11.
Jones finished with 17 points to lead all players, while Walker had 12 and Kostecka scored 11. Champion had eight to go with four steals.
Loyola plays its second-straight home game on Monday, Jan. 16, when it hosts Boston University at 7 p.m. in a game that will air live on CBS Sports Network.
