BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team closed out its season with strong effort, but fell short to the Lafayette College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored the three members of their Class of 2018 -- Alyssa Bonnesen, Lauryn Davidson and student manager Patrick Fogarty.

"I want to thank Alyssa, Lauryn and Patrick for all of their efforts and dedication while they have been with our program," said Head Coach Naomi Meiburger. "We wish them the best in their future endeavors!"

Loyola had a pair of scoring chances in the first three minutes off corner kicks earned off plays by Molly O'Brien and Julianna Cabrera, but shots did not materialize. The Greyhounds then snuffed out a chance in the 11th minute as Krista Kissell was one-on-one with Loyola defender Jen Moutenot, but Moutenot blocked her 19-yard shot attempt.

In the 13th minute, Cabrera had a shot off a cross from Sarah Ensor that was blocked, and less than three minutes later, Mia Sardella tried to convert a header but it was saved by Lafayette goalie Maggie Pohl.

Moutenot flicked a shot over her head from inside seven yards in the 34th minute, but it went into the hands of Pohl to keep the game scoreless.

Despite a 3-1 shot advantage by Loyola in the first half, both teams headed to the locker rooms knotted at zero.

Lafayette (5-8-2 overall, 3-5-1 Patriot League) took the lead in the 66th minute, as Alex Stanford fired a hard shot past Loyola goalkeeper Sumer Rahe, off assists from both Alexa Buffa and Gabrielle Lassinger.

Loyola's best chance to equalize came in the 89th minute as Casey McKenzie shook off defenders and made a quick break to the goal, but her shot was stopped by goalie Kelly O'Brien.

The Greyhounds (3-13-1, 0-8-1) outshot Lafayette 10-5 and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

"I'm so proud of how this team came together at the end of the season; they fought and battled through every minute and showed great character in the face of adversity," Meiburger said. "This bodes well for our future, and I can't wait to get back to work on the field with this group."
