Quick Hits About The Hounds
  • Loyola University Maryland embarks on a two-game road trip Wednesday, Feb. 8, when it travels to Annapolis, Maryland, to face the U.S. Naval Academy.
  • Jarred Jones and Andre Walker have combined for 34 of the Greyhounds' 58 games with 10 or more points this season. Jones has posted 10 or more 18 times, Walker 16. The duo of Jones and Walker lead Loyola with 15.3 and 14.9 points per game this season.
  • Cam Gregory has averaged 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in Loyola first 12 Patriot League games, raising his season-long averages to 8.9 and 7.0. He is shooting 68.5 percent from the field in those games, tops in the League in conference games.
  • Loyola has attempted more free throws (526) than all but one other Patriot League Team (Bucknell, 531), despite being tied for the fewest number of games played (23).
  • Loyola is second in the Patriot League in offensive rebounds per game with 11.5. Cam Gregory leads the way by averaging 2.8 offensive boards per game.
  • The Greyhounds also top the League in 3-point field goal defense, holding opponents to 31.4 percent. That mark is 39th nationally, a vast departure from last year when Loyola ranked 307th.

Patriot League Network
  • For the fourth year in a row, the Patriot League Network on Campus Insiders will provide an outstanding viewing option for college basketball fans while showing more than 125 contests from Patriot League venues, including every Loyola home game.
  • Gary Lambrecht will call the play-by-play with Loyola alum Jim Chivers adding commentary.
  • In conjunction with Campus Insiders, the Network launched in 2013 and provides one of the most comprehensive digital packages of any conference nationally. Check LoyolaGreyhounds.com for links to each game.
  • Fans can watch the digital broadcasts on desktop or laptop computers, any smart phone or tablet and through a variety of connected television devices.

Series History Versus Navy
  • With campuses located 26 miles apart (as the crow flies), Loyola and Navy will meet for the 31st time on the hardwood when the teams play Wednesday night.
  • The Midshipmen lead the series 24-6 after sweeping the season series in each of the last two years and winning the first meeting this season. Loyola won the first two meetings between the teams in 2013-2014, the Greyhounds' first year in the Patriot League.
  • In this year's first meeting, Navy jumped out to a nine-point lead in the game's first eight minutes, and the Midshipmen held off every Loyola run for a 75-62 win on Jan. 11 in Baltimore.
  • The Greyhounds twice closed the gap to three points in the first half, but Navy would not allow them to draw closer. A Chuck Champion pull-up jumper with 10:39 to play in the stanza made it 17-14 Navy, but Nourse Fox hit a three for the Midshipmen 26 seconds later. Navy would go on lead by eight at halftime, 36-28.
  • After the Midshipmen scored the second half's first four points, Loyola got within seven, 43-36, on an Andrew Kostecka three, but George Kiernan responded in kind with one of his three from behind the arc for Navy.
  • A traditional 3-point play by James Fives pulled Loyola back within seven, 48-41, with 12:45 to go in regulation, but after Shawn Anderson and Andre Walker traded free throws, Kiernan knocked down another three, and the Navy lead was back to 11.
  • The advantage grew to 13 with two more Anderson shots from the charity stripe, but Loyola reeled off the next six points, the final four coming on transition layups by Jarred Jones and Champion. The latter's made it 56-49 Navy at 8:54. The Midshipmen did not make a field goal until a Tom Lacey bucket at 6:03, but by the Navy was back up by 11.
  • Anderson led the Midshipmen with 15 points, while Bryce Dulin had 14 and Kiernan tallied 11. Jones finished with 17 points to lead all players, while Walker had 12 and Kostecka scored 11. Champion had eight to go with four steals.
  • The teams first met in January 1910 when Navy defeated the Greyhounds, 36-10.
  • Prior to the January 2014 game, Loyola's most recent win in the series came on January 10, 1994, when the Skip Prosser-coached Greyhounds recorded a 78-68 victory in Reitz Arena.

Last Time Out
  • Andre Walker scored a game-high 25 points, while Jarred Jones and Cam Gregory each had double-doubles for Loyola as the Greyhounds picked up a 78-63 win over the Army West Point on Saturday afternoon in Reitz Arena.
  • Five Loyola scored eight or more points as the Greyhounds won their fourth-straight. Jones finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Gregory had 14 and 10 to go with four steals.
  • The Greyhounds went up by nine, 31-22, with just over two-minutes left in the first half on one of Walker's five 3-pointers, but the Black Knights got back within six when Tommy Funk made a three from the corner off a Jordan Fox drive-and-kick.
  • Walker, however, released a fading three with under a second left, and the shot banked in to put Loyola in front, 34-25, at halftime. He finished with 18 points at the break.
  • Loyola stretched the lead to 11 on the first possession of the second half, but Army West Point made it a six-point game, 40-34, on a Matt Wilson layup with 15:59 on the clock. A James Fives pull-up jumper for Loyola 25 seconds later started a 21-5 run that would give the Greyhounds a double-digit cushion for the rest of the game.
  • Defense played a significant role in the stretch as Loyola had steals on four-consecutive possessions, two by Fives and one each by Walker and Kostecka. Kostecka tipped in an offensive rebound at 13:14, and Chuck Champion converted a jumper from 16 feet at 11:57, pushing the lead to 15, 52-37.
  • Champion and Army West Point's Kennedy Edwards traded baskets before Jarred Jones scored in the paint, and Walker drained a three at 9:57, making the lead 20, 59-39. A missed three on the Black Knights' end led to two free throws by Jones at 9:32, stretching the advantage to 22, 61-39.
  • Army West Point would chip away at its deficit, getting within 13, 65-52, on a Funk jumper at 6:04, but Gregory tipped in a miss on Loyola's offensive end to make it a 15-point game. Funk then converted a traditional 3-point play with a layup and free throw, but Jones came up with a second-chance basket at 4:12 for Loyola.
  • Luke Morrison hit a three with 2:19 on the clock, and the Black Knights were again within 12, 71-59, but another Gregory offensive board and tip-in ensured they would not draw closer for the rest of the game.
  • Gregory scored 12 of his points and had seven rebounds in the second half. Six of his boards came on the offensive glass, and they all led to second-chance points for the Greyhounds. Funk and Fox scored 13 and 12 points, respectively for Army West Point, and John Emezie added 10.

Walker Draws League Honors
  • Andre Walker was named The Rock Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday, following a pair of wins in which he averaged 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and 2.5 steals last week. The award is his second of the season (Dec. 3) and third of his career.
  • Last Wednesday, Walker scored 19 points in a two-point win over the Mountain Hawks with his final basket providing the final margin. Tied at 60-60, Walker drove the right side of the lane, crossed over to his left hand and made a contested layup from inside the paint with 27.3 seconds left in regulation. He finished the game with nine rebounds, six assists and two steals to go with his point total.
  • Walker then posted 18 points in the first half, and a game-high 25 overall, of the Greyhounds' outing Saturday against Army West Point, helping Loyola defeat the Black Knights. He knocked down five of seven from 3-point range and also grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals.

Winning The Close Ones
  • Loyola's 62-60 victory over Lehigh on Wednesday night upped the Greyhounds' record to 5-1 this season in games decided by three or fewer points. Their only loss came in a 52-49 setback at Colgate, but they have now beaten Stony Brook and Lehigh by one, American and Lehigh by two and Holy Cross by three.
  • During G.G. Smith's four years as head coach, Loyola is 14-7 in such games.

Clutch Late
  • Andre Walker's game-winning layup with 27.3 seconds left against Lehigh on Feb. 1 was his third game-winning basket of the season and second against the Mountain Hawks. He hit a three with three with eight-tenths of a second left on Jan. 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to push Loyola in front for an 84-83 win the first time the teams met.
  • Earlier in the year, Walker hit a winning layup with five-tenths of a second remaining at Stony Brook, giving the Greyhounds a 71-70 road win. He then came up defensively at American, keeping the Eagles' Sa'eed Nelson from driving and blocking his 3-pointer at the buzzer for a two-point win.
  • He is also 36-of-44 from the free-throw line in the final five minutes of games through 22 games this year.
  • Walker now has scored game-winning points six times during his career. Last year, he scored on a drive to the basket with less than five seconds left at home against Lehigh, and he hit two free throws with just over three ticks on the clock for a win at the U.S. Military Academy. As a freshman in 2013-2014, he made two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to beat Colgate University in triple overtime.

Double Double-Double
  • Cam Gregory and Jarred Jones posted double-doubles in the same game for the second time this season on Saturday when Gregory had 14 points and 10 rebounds against Army West Point as Jones posted 16 and 10. The double-double was Jones' sixth this season, while Gregory picked up his third. All but one of the double-doubles (Jones' at Duquesne in the season-opener) have come in Loyola wins.
  • The duo also turned the feat on Jan. 18 in a win over Boston University. In that game, Gregory scored 15 and had 12 boards, while Jones added 14 and 10.

Rare Company
  • Jarred Jones scored his 1,000th career point in the first half at Lafayette on Jan. 28, becoming the 36th player in school history to cross the plateau.
  • That in itself put him in rarefied air, but he is also just the second player to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 steals, 100 assists and 100 blocked shots in a career. Erik Etherly (2010-13) had 1,245, 699, 121 and 121.
  • Jones is one of just five active players in NCAA Division I (per Sports-Reference.com) to hit those numbers. The group includes Tim Coleman (NJIT), Jerome Frink (Fla. Int'l 2012-14; LIU Brooklyn 2015-17),  Jones, Reggie Upshaw (Middle Tennessee) and Tim Williams (Samford 2012-14; New Mexico 2015-17).

Cam Contributing Big In League Play
  • Cam Gregory has seen the biggest jump on the team of points per game in the Patriot League (12.5) versus overall (8.0). He has scored 150 of his 204 points (73.5 percent) in the last 12 games.
  • After posting 14 points against Army, Gregory has made 63 of 92 shots, good for 68.5 percent from the field; that mark leads the conference in League games. He also is Loyola's top rebounder in conference games with 90, 8.0 per game.

Walker's Outstanding Outing
  • Andre Walker entered Loyola's Jan. 18 nationally televised game against Boston University needing to score 29 to hit 1,000 for his career. By halftime, he was only nine points away from the plateau.
  • Walker career-high of 35 were the most by a Loyola player since Jamal Barney had 40 on Jan. 14, 2009, versus NJIT.
  • He did so by going 9-of-12 from 3-point range, tying the school record for most made 3-pointers in a game. Walker matched the mark of Andre Collins who knocked down nine on Jan. 8, 2006, against Marist College.
  • Walker's ninth three of the game came with 12:55 to play in regulation, a basket that gave him an even 1,000 points for his career. By reaching the milestone, Walker became the 35th player in school history with 1,000 or more points.
  • With 272 career assists, Walker is 12th all-time at Loyola, 10 behind current Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone for 11th.

On The Boards
  • Loyola has outrebounded its opponents in eight of 12 Patriot League games so far this season and are averaging 2.5 more boards per game (32.0-29.5).

Jones Flourishing
  • Jarred Jones has been leading, or among the leaders for, the Greyhounds in scoring and rebounding from the outset this season, and after 23 games his averages stand at 14.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Those marks are both eighth in the Patriot League.
  • He has led the team, or tied for team-high honors, in scoring 11 times this year.  The fifth-year senior – Jones received a medical hardship waiver for the 2014-2015 season – also leads the blocked shots (24), and is second in both steals (33) second in assists (43).
  • Recently, he broke into Loyola's career rebounding top-20 and is 16th with 553. He logged his 100th career steal against Mount St. Mary's, and he is now 10th all-time with 123. Jones is also fifth on the career blocked shots list with 110.
  • The Family Business
  • Jarred Jones and his younger sister, Brionna, are both standouts for their NCAA Division I teams. Brionna leads the third-ranked University of Maryland with averages of 19.3 and 10.3 (through game on 2/2). Younger sister Stephanie is a freshman for the Terps, as well, averaging 4.3 points per game.

Defensive Improvements
  • Last year, Loyola was 261st in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (75.3 points allowed per game), and it was even worse in opponent 3-point field-goal percentage (307th, .372).
  • This year, opponents are shooting just .314 (127-of-405) from 3-point range and averaging 68.7 points per game. Those numbers rank 39th and 89th in NCAA Division I through games of Feb. 5.
  • Getting To The Line
  • Loyola leads the Patriot League in free throws made per game (15.8) and attempts per game (22.9).
  • Despite being tied for the fewest games played (23), the Greyhounds have attempted just five fewer free throws than the League-leader in attempts, Bucknell University (531, 24 games).
  • Opponents, in fact, are averaging more than four fewer attempts from the line this season (421 total, 18.3 per game).
  • Andre Walker leads the League in free-throw percentage, having made 80 of his 92 attempts, good for 87.0 percent.

Up Next
  • The Greyhounds stay on the road for their next game, a Saturday, Feb. 11, contest at Boston University that will tip at 12 noon on the American Sports Network.
