WILMINGTON, N.C. - Davidson College held Loyola University Maryland to a .014 hitting percentage in that last two sets Saturday afternoon, defeating the Greyhounds in three, 25-21, 25-15, 25-20 at the Springhill Suites Mayfaire Invitational.
Ann Ernst and Mackenzie Fedota led Loyola (0-2 overall) in kills with eight each, while Molly Werts contributed 12 assists and Ashley Kozer had 10. Zoe Pawlak added a team-best 10 digs.
Davidson (2-0) had help from Mason Rooney with eight kills and 11 assists, while Sydney Champaigne contributed 15 assists for the Wildcats. Elise Edman had a match-high 19 digs.
The Greyhounds got the first point on the board to start the match and brought their score to four before Davidson picked up the pace. A five-point run by the Wildcats put them in the lead at 7-5. Following a late timeout by the Greyhounds, they were able to put up nine more tallies but the Wildcats were able to hold on, closing the set at 25-21.
Davidson opened the second set with three-straight points that were interrupted by Loyola. The Greyhounds chased the Wildcats with a three-point run, which was answered by a Davidson four-point run. This brought Davidson's lead to 11-5 before Loyola called the set's first timeout. The teams continued to exchange points, but the Wildcats maintained their lead winning the set 25-15.
In the third set, Davidson was first on the board, but Loyola was quick to answer with two points. Loyola took a short lead for the first time since the first set, but it was quickly topped again after a five-point run making the score 9-6 in Davidson's favor.
The Greyhounds managed a late four-point run, but were downed by the Wildcats 25-20.
Loyola will face Appalachian State University tomorrow, August 27, at 10:00 a.m. in Wilmington, N.C.
